Question '70 Lower headlights mouldings question

My friend wants to buy a '70 Chevelle and is pointing to me some of the details, especially the thin chrome mouldings below the headlights (see picture) which some have and some don't have (I haven't figured out why)… Were these original or added on?…and on which model were they available?

Claude.

I believe it was available until January ‘70 then dropped. They look great.

Re: '70 Lower headlights mouldings question

Here is what I do know. My 70 SS 454/ M-22 El Camino was ordered in Feb. of 70 by me. It was a Balt built ( 2nd Wk. of March.) I was delivered ( Apr. 3-4 to Sahli Chevrolet in Beaver Falls, Pa.) with the Alum. trim under the headlights.
That Alum. trim is still under the H. Lights, The driver side Alum. is worn a bit on the vertical side near the outside phillips screw. The bumper was touching it for many years. My best guess is......... The Marketing folks at Chevy. were testing the market. " IF " it was a noticeable improvement it would be used on all the units built.
If it did not reach or make the " WOW " factor, The bean counters said NO!
I would guess, Its the same old , Same old.......... It cost to much and it does not sell cars. Other than my guess, I have no idea.

Re: '70 Lower headlights mouldings question

So I assume that they could've been installed on earlier production cars and dropped later on?… (same as the slight taillight change in early '71)
or
could it be that they might have been included in some option package on higher end models?…

Re: '70 Lower headlights mouldings question

My early 70 Malibu convertible had them but they were kind of beat up so I left them off when I re-did the car.
I think I still have them though.

Re: '70 Lower headlights mouldings question

My Dec 70 Arlington SS convertible had them and the rocker moldings that had been painted around at one point in its earlier life. There was no separate RPO for it.

They are anodized aluminum, not chrome. They are on early production cars August through january/March time frame. Both of my 70s had them. (January Baltimore and August flint).

1970 Monte Carlo came with them but cast metal, they tended to pit.

Re: '70 Lower headlights mouldings question

They can be seen on many of the lower optioned models in the sales brochures of the time including the 4 doors or crew cab Chevelles and convertibles. I thought I had more pictures, apparently not. The laptop is not giving them up today.
