68 Chevelle convertible power top wiring

I am getting ready to install my interior and have some questions about installing power top wiring. This is a factory AC car if that makes a difference. I see the harness is available from the switch to the motor. Does this run inside the protective sheath along with the rear harness? I do not see any engine side harnesses on the web but have read some articles saying there is one similar to my main AC power harness that connects to the horn relay. However I also read the power top harness connects to the fuse box with a auto reset relay. Can anyone give me some clarification on this. Also how difficult is it to lower and raise the top without a power top (currently does not have a top canvas installed yet). I haven't decided if I am going to install the kit but I will most likely run the interior harness if and when I do install the power components. There is very little information in the assembly manual. Thank you..

Re: 68 Chevelle convertible power top wiring

it has been awhile since i worked on mine.
the power for the top does not go thru the fuse box wiring.
was a separate 12awgfrom the horn relay bus;
going to a thermal relay on firewall attached near brake master cyl.
then it went thru a grommet into the interior directly to the top power switch.
the top power switch would switch polarity of power going to the top motor;
this allowed the top motor to run either up or down with only 2-wires,
IIRC these 2-wires wire extra; but went thru the plastic sheath to rear of interior under carpet...

is this a power top frame ??
i cannot recall if there were 2-versions of the frame..
but until i got my top motor working i disconnected the top cylinders from the top frame.
it was fairly easy to fold and lift the top frame
one person on each side made it even easier; watch for pinch area on fingers

Hi Vince, thank you and after you supplied this info I went out to M&H and priced out the 3 harnesses and circuit breaker that I need. No its not a power top frame but I think only the piston shoulder bolt is different. I can certainly be wrong. Man they really didn't think out the harnesses in the old days requiring additional power leads for almost any power accessory. Oh well. Thanks again

To answer your other question, it does go on the wire channel with the other rear harness wires

Thanks Brian, question, what is that thing bolted to the seat support at the far left of your picture. Looks like a duct. Do you have a rear window defogger?

Not Brian but that's part of the gas tank venting system.

Just an update to my response to Vince earlier. I stated that the shoulder bolts were different and that was incorrect and they are the same. However there are two methods used to secure the piston eye bolt. Some have two small bolts one on each side and some have one through bolt with the same bushings like my 68. The eye bolt bushings are not interchangeable between the manual and power, totally different. The manual and power frames are the same. However the bushings are not the same between 68/69 and 70-72 so if you buy a kit make sure it is specific to your year. Inline sells different bushing and wave washers kits but most resellers do not so beware. I hope this posts helps someone down the road for those wanting to change over from manual to power...
