Re: Barnfinds z16

This car has an A/C dash. Was A/C available with the Z16 package?

No, A/C was not available on Z16s.

Picture of left side shows holes for Malibu side trim with the SS emblem on front fender.

Z16s were Super Sports which did not have side trim.

There are no pictures of Z16 unique mechanical parts so it is hard to tell if this is a real Z16.

The blue is wrong but it may have been painted.

For that price there would have to be GM documentation with the car.

Re: Barnfinds z16

I might have to back track on my off the cuff comment. I could not get this link to open https://www.chevelles.com/forums/60-...t-4.html?amp=1 and could not locate Jeff's assessment. I shot off the cuff without researching properly. The story got me and it sounds like total bs.

After looking more closely, the car has the boxed frame that came on the Z16 AND convertibles.

The trim tag decodes to include all Z16 options. VIN is correct for a 65 SS. https://www.chevellestuff.net/qd/tag...kan_decode.htm

The original car was Regal red per trim tag, one of 3 colors available on the Z16. I see proof of this red in some chips and door jam hinges.

160 speedometer. It appears newer or cleaner than the other dash gauges. This may be due to the photography involved.

I would like to see the firewall to see the modifications done to convert from heater to a/c box. I know that no Z16 was offered with ac, but maybe the story is correct and it was added just as the Malibu trim.

If someone has a good link to Jeff's assessment, I'd like to see it.

This car would need a close personal inspection. I would check to see if the frame had been switched out. There's a lot of goofy stuff on this car that you would not expect someone to do to a real Z16 even back in the day. Back then they were still considered cream of the crop type cars. Reverting one back to a Malibu just sounds a bit off.

This blue one is definitely real...

Re: Barnfinds z16

I remember in one of the old Hot Rod annual Yearbooks, perhaps around 1975, there was a '65 Z-16 that was basically stock except for a TH400 plus Corvette knock-off wheels. Muscle cars were still playthings and hardly anyone gave a care about matching #s. Block castings, yes for class racing, but original to the car, who cared?

Re: Barnfinds z16

Over the years some Z16s were rebodied for various reasons (wrecks, etc)

Mark Mecham talked about a rebody that he knew of.

The Malibu side trim could have been added to prevent parking lot damage. Who knows 54 years later.

Would like to see any documentation and more pictures of the details.

well in the other thread Jeff has stated that car has a very interesting history that he was going to let up to the owner/buyer to tell. I for one hope someone tells it and I get to read it. when Jeff checks out a car you know its a good one.
