Re: 1967 Canada chevelle malibu ss

Congrats on a rare ride. I'm sure I'm not alone in wanting to see some pictures of this rarity.

The Malibu SS wrapped up when the 138-series SS396 began production in Oshawa around November 21, 1966. The rush to order a new car usually takes place when the weather is bad in Canada so the new car is in when the good weather arrives. My point is, not many ordered a car like yours in the fall, and production of the Malibu SS stopping in the fall ensured there weren't many built. Your car would be quite rare with the L34, although I'm not sure of the actually number I would guess around 300 at most or significantly less made. 1967 Convertible Malibu SS production with the 396 stood at 11 units when they were phased out.
Your car would have been built with regular Malibu grille, hood, rear cove & woodgrained dash strip, but all of the chassis upgrades included with the SS396 were also included when the L34 was specified on a Malibu SS.

So Chris, is your Malibu SS Deepwater Blue? One of the few 1967 136-series Malibu SS coupes with an L34 that I know of is Deepwater Blue. There is another that is Silverglaze with a black vinyl roof, woodgrained wheel, J52 disk brakes but manual steering. I just remembered, there is a '67 Malibu SS L34 being restored in Texas that is Butternut Yellow.

You've got a very rare car there. A 136-Malibu SS with L34. The J-code paint was a '67 Buick & Olds Toronado colour, same as mine. J-code: https://www.chevelles.com/showroom/d...sportcoupe.jpg

What a cool car! The badging was often embellished as the plain Malibu SS was not the base vehicle portrayed as the Malibu SS.

Re: 1967 Canada chevelle malibu ss

When your car was repainted they dressed the car as an SS396. I don't have the actual figure handy, but Oshawa built around 600 138-series SS396 coupes for '67.

Not all options will appear on the trim tag, just the ones that Fisher Body needed to accommodate before passing it through the hole in the wall to the Oshawa Assembly Line. So are you sure the car was actually built with a 396? I would expect L34 to be on the trim tag, otherwise it could have been a 283 or 327. In 1967 model built in Canada for Canada, they still didn't put the serial # on the engines, even the big blocks that came in from Tonawanda. A 10-bolt rear was used with all except the 327 4-speed & the 396.

Body came from the body bank 2nd shift, September 26, 1966 and likely would have been a complete car 9-28. I see A51 which in the context of the build time would mean the car is a Malibu SS. Console would have been included with 4-speed, Powerglide or 396. M20 means 4-speed. Paint 9 JJ means solid enamel in Verde Green. It would also have been body-colour on the firewall and in the trunk. Other options such as radio or tachometer will not appear on the trim tag, but a rear antenna (U73) or rear speaker (U80) would have, as would power windows (A31). During the Malibu SS production time there was no separate console (D55) option as it was included with 4-speed, Powerglide or 396. Once you start seeing D55 on the trim tag, you have passed the window where the Malibu SS was produced, and any 136-series (or 135) would be produced as a Malibu (so no more 396 option), and if a console were desired it would be a separate option that would appear on the trim tag. The 138-series SS396 started production in Oshawa around November 21, and the "A51 Sports Option" that turned a Malibu into a Malibu SS was dropped.

There were probably a few orders placed by dealers that didn't get the memo, where Malibus were ordered after the cut-off date with A51 and surprised the customer and dealer by being a Malibu with buckets & no console. I have a friend that has a '67 Beaumont Sport Deluxe that was built November 25th, but the car was actually built as a Beaumont Custom (~Malibu) rather than a Sport Deluxe. The original owner was upset that the car was not a Sport Deluxe as expected and added all the Sport Deluxe trim when the car was repainted. It also now has a 396 in place of the 283.
