Re: 1967 Canada chevelle malibu ss

That is solid gold documentation. The car without a doubt is a very rare one. Your Chevelle would have been built with a 3.55:1 12-bolt rear with Positraction. Pretty much stripped-down & go-fast.

As for the figure of 5803 produced, that is for all 13617 models, in other words, total production in Canada for any V8 Malibu Sport Coupe (SS or not) from 283 through 396. I'll bet my estimate of around 300 for Malibu SS 396 coupes is probably too high by at least 50%, but we may never know.

Frankly I'm shocked that L34 doesn't appear on the trim tag. Thee body would have been dropped onto a complete SS396 chassis. Everything would be the same as an SS396 right down to the spring tags, 14x6 wheels (not so on a '66), rear braces & revised front brake line routing.

Re: 1967 Canada chevelle malibu ss

Welcome to the site, Chris. Congrats on finding this rare car.

What are your plans for it? Personally I would return all the emblems to the original Canadian ones, but I know that's not as simple as it sounds.

Re: 1967 Canada chevelle malibu ss

Chris, I'm not a guy who is up on the pricing trends. Here's the thing: If it were presented as a correct Malibu SS with factory 396 power you will have something truly unique, but dressed as an SS396 with a 136-series in the VIN it may be treated (incorrectly) as a clone car. Really the '67 SS396 is very attractive and unless the car is ready for a make-over then I would be inclined to leave it as is.
When the time comes for a repaint, that is the time to basically restore it as a Malibu but with the SS rockers & wheel well moldings, plus the '65 Malibu SS quarter emblems. Flat hood & Malibu grille, plain Malibu rear trim, Malibu above the glove box but SS on the horn button. That is if you are striving for "correctness". Really though, people have been customizing these cars since day 2.

As for Verde Green paint, just pretend you have a 1967 Buick and you will find the colour there.

Below is a little study comparing an SS396 with D96 stripes to the equivalent Malibu SS with a 396 & D96. D96 stripes on a Malibu SS were only available with the 396.

Re: 1967 Canada chevelle malibu ss

Chris, I had forgotten but 3 years ago I spent an hour or more on the phone with a guy named Vince that also owns a '67 Malibu SS with 396 power. We reasoned among ourselves and the best educated guess we came up with was 120 built. Close enough, not a quotable, factual number but a best guess; they are uber rare either way.

And I already ordered the correct hood for my car and took off the 396 badge off front grill and the back badge aswell and ordered the two Malibu ss emblems for both rear quarters lol the glove box already says Malibu above it... it's all original inside the car and it has the ribbed rockers already aswell

Hey cam I did some extream research on this car I know it's rare already but the original paint was verde green ok so I did a small scratch on this hood to see if the scooped hood was real this car has 4 colours on it the first colour was verde green then it was painted orange then it was painted a darker green then ford blue
...so in my scratch test this came up I scrached the blue paint off then the dark green was under that..then the orange paint was next and you will not believe me but the original verde green is under the orange I can not believe this hood is from factory so all my badges and hood are correct I'm gonna take a picture to show you....

Re: 1967 Canada chevelle malibu ss

That hood could have been installed when the car was new at the dealer or after it was purchased and painted green to match the car.
