68 Chevelle AC???

I have a 68 coupe that has a 69 firewall welded in to house stock 69 ac equipment. Is there a good mechanical diagram or good pictures for a 68 or 69 available that anyone knows of that can allow me to itemize the parts for the air conditioning system under the dash; ducts (sizes) vents and routing, etc? I'm not even sure if AC was available in 68 as stock equipment. I'd like to keep the OEM/period look as much as possible even knowing this car did not have AC originally. Thanks!

Re: 68 Chevelle AC???

you are going to need the factory assembly manual. took the whole system out of my '68 el camino ss396 parts car few years back. several pieces!! the factory manual has nearly a dozen pages expertly rendered...

Re: 68 Chevelle AC???

I may be wrong, but I think a lot of the pieces of the system are very similar if not the same, but there are some things that I know are completely different. Most if not all of the vents and duct work are different between the 68-69 year models. I can’t remember about the vent on the right side, but I know that the center vent and left side vent are different. Also the center distribution duct is different. I held the two model years side by side, and they definitely don’t interchange. Hope that helps

Just my opinion, but you'd almost be better off trying to find a donor car to take everything off of as opposed to trying to find every single part. Especially for a 68

Re: 68 Chevelle AC???

A lot is different between 68 and 69 factory cars with AC. First the cowl itself is different. Location of the compressor, different pulleys, belts, water pump, wiring etc. I have seen that you can buy repro cowl but unless you are ready for an in depth frame off job you might not want to do that. Easiest way out is to buy after market ac system but even then you are going to have to know which cowl is in the car. Here is a couple pic of my car during my restoration (on going). I have no idea why pics loaded on my PC get rotated when uploaded to this site. Just open the image, save and open with your viewer and rotate them. Best of luck. These are tough cars to do, many one year only parts and design

Re: 68 Chevelle AC???

Here's a couple pics of my all-original '68 L79 Malibu with factory air. Engine compartment and interior. This is the way I purchased it, and nothing has been changed except maybe some maintenance items. Well-used with 126,000 miles on it.

Sorry about the steering wheel, forgot to straighten the front tires before pic was taken. But maybe that helps to show AC vent placement....

When I works, I works hard.
When I sits, I sits loose.
When I thinks, I falls asleep.

Re: 68 Chevelle AC???

How about a Haynes Shop Manual for it? It might have a good schematic.

Factory Assembly Manual is what you need. forget the Haynes, not worth much.

This is the book you need. It has all the a/c diagrams and electrical schematics that you will need as well as other service maintenance sections. If you need one for a '69, I'm sure one is available for that as well. This great book has helped me on numerous occasions. Check ebay or Amazon for a copy. I found mine at a swap meet.
