Radiator Core Support

Just when I think things are wrapping up, another hole starts leaking water through the dam. I'm in need of a 1970 Chevelle big block radiator core support? Just found out I have an after market one installed and I'm trying to keep this car as original as possible.

Re: Radiator Core Support

What is the difference between a small block and big block core radiator support? I see several small block for sale, however, don't know the difference.

Re: Radiator Core Support

The "small block" core support only has three bolts that hold the top plate on rather than four and a smaller cut out for air flow into the radiator but it's fairly easy to change both of the above to use it on a big block.

BTW, the reason for the quotation marks is not all small blocks had the so called "small block" core support.

Re: Radiator Core Support

I know the difference for the radiator top plate, however, what is the difference in the core support that surrounds the radiator for a big block and small block?

Re: Radiator Core Support

The difference is the size of the center opening, where the rad mounts. Terry

Re: Radiator Core Support

Like was said, the air intake opening can be cut out.

Also a couple of differences, one is the number of headlights and another is an extension is added on the bottom for 4 row radiators.

Dean - do you have a picture of the extension added for 4-row radiators? One of your pictures is not displaying for me.

If you are going after function, not total originality, as stated it is easy to modify the opening and relocate the top holes. You just need the longer top support plate that attaches with the 4x screws. It will be undetectable and appear for anyone looking under the hood. The lower support also has a position to mover the lower rubber cushion over. Did it back in the late '70s.

Re: Radiator Core Support

Radiator supports aren't just based on engine size. My 68 L79 with AC (C60) has the larger Radiator support with 4 bolt top plate and with the K02 heavy duty clutch driven fan assembly, I believe all BB and AC cars had heavy duty cooling which used the larger radiator support
