6 in a row, no go.

So I have been looking for a 6 cylinder El Camino and its harder than you think to find a good one. I have always enjoyed the simplicity and utilitarian nature of these cars. Besides, I already have a documented and nearly finished LS5/M22 Camino and I needed a new project to work on. I thought it would be cool to own both extremes. Besides how often do you see a 6 cylinder car at the local car shows? Everything is a clone SS and I figured a change of pace would be nice. Well I find this candidate on eBay. It didn't meet the reserve and I contacted the seller and worked out a deal. I know.... never buy something on the interweb without looking at it in person. Since this wasn't a big investment and the owner spun a good tale about the condition I went ahead and bought it. Well, last week the shipper shows up and delivers my "rust free" car. Wait... before I go any further, here is the actual description copied directly from eBay:

"1972 Chevrolet el Camino.
RARE 250ci 6 cylinder ‘turbo thrift engine’ …only 1307 made in 1972
3 speed in floor (was on column…converted) with 4 speed Saginaw included
Absolutely NO RUST anywhere on the Car…I was amazed
This was your “basic” car in 1972…no air, no power steering or power disk brakes
All original …everything works as it did new in 1972…wipers, heater, AM radio (yes AM)
All gauges and lights work as they should even down to the cigarette lighter
Black interior with bench seat…dash is like new…like new headliner…looks perfect
This car is unmolested …NO RUST…where do you find a 44 year old car this nice.
Good straight all original body…no dents or scratches…bed looks great.
Corvette Rally wheels with good tires….new air shocks
Paint looks good but not showroom….RUST FREE
Good strong inline 6 cylinder …runs and drives excellent….motor just purrrrs….as it did in 1972
It’s even got side pipes….on a 6 cylinder…is that not WILD….have you ever seen that???
Drop a Small / Big Block in it, add bucket seats and console, and have a $25,000 Muscle car"

Well, it took me all of 15 minutes to determined the entire floor was toast, rusted beyond repair. Someone had hacked out the footwell areas and scabbed in some other floor pan patches. Just layed it in there, no fitment, total hack job. The right rear quarter panel was riveted in and will need to be replaced. The column to floor shift conversion looked like they used beavers to gnaw the hole in the floor. Why is it people think silicone sealant is the answer to all leaks? Yup, sealant around the windows and smugglers box. Don't know why though as the rust holes in the floor weren't going to allow it to retain any water anyway. I was disgusted and just rolled it into the garage. I'm going to fix it and will document it here, but boy was I hornswaggled. I don't know how some people sleep at night. Here is a teaser pic to show that outwardly it looks decent. I'll post the horror pics as I get the nerve to dig into it further.

More to come...

Sorry you got bit. It never ceases to amaze me the lack of conscience some folks exhibit. Did the person have much feedback, positive or negative?

That sucks. Based on the picture you posted, it doesn't look like a bad car.

Re: 6 in a row, no go.

I would file a claim with Ebay. I guarantee they will have the seller return a large portion of the purchase price to you if you pursue it.

Buyers need to take a stand against this type of fraud. It will help your fellow car enthusiasts out in the future!

I remember seeing that one. when you look at it & think about the 6 banger, you think it's going to be a winner. the elky looks great on the trailer. good luck I hope you get it sorted out.

What a bummer. I does look "purdee" and I also share your sentiments about a basic 6-cylinder vehicle devoid of options. It sounds like just enough effort to conceal the true known shortcomings was employed, for shame!
You do know what they say about used cars though, "Caveat emptor". Maybe they said it in Roman times, but it means, "Buyer beware"

Re: 6 in a row, no go.

I made the deal outside of eBay. I have done this countless times and never got burned. My number was bound to come up. Oh well in for a penny... I'll fix this old girl up and put her where she needs to be. First up will be to remove the interior and assess the floor plan repairs. I hope to get to that this weekend if this rain will ever stop. I will post pics of the carnage.

Re: 6 in a row, no go.

Even though you bought it out of Ebay, list the seller's name here, so at least us TCers will have a name to lookout for... These guys usually don't do this sort of thing one time...

Just this.........but then we're the ones who would end up in jail.

Jon - hopefully with some floor work you can get the El Camino back in shape. Is it too late to post the eBay listing so we all can see who you dealt with?
