Re: Does anyone know how many 1968 chevelle convertibles are left?

According to the 1968 Chevelle convertible survivor website, as of 4:30 yesterday afternoon, there were 1,023 left.

I'm kidding.

Unless you had direct access to every states DMV I don't know how you could know. I wonder if even they know. Since their records are not public record, there's probably no way to ever know.

Maybe that's a new way that the DMV could make money. Deposit $1 into a machine, enter a vehicle make model and year and get a printout of the number of those vehicles still titled.
You'd think with the advances we've made with computers it would already be commonplace.

oh yeah, welcome to the site. Stick around, you'll like it here.

I agree know way to no. The DMV would only count road worthy ones and would not account for how many is progress in garages around the world. DMV would also only tell you how many in the U.S. So how ever many where built total figure there is less than that number.

Your analysis aside the question in and off itself is just plain SILLY! Besides that the DMV operations in the various states are not about to go counting 68 Chevelels that are registered and providing that information for wanna be "collectors"!

It is getting nutty the way this hobby is evolving.

Just take the number that were produced, consider that was 42 years ago and assume at least a handful a year die. This will give you an answer that is as good as any other answer you might find.

Possibly I just don't get it but what purpose could knowing the number serve anyway??? If there are 11,016 or 9614 left so what? Is this some sort of bragging rights issue...1 of 9614 left? Is knowing the number somehow an indicator of some faux exclusivity?

I can see that information like this on some of these ultra rare cars like the Gran Sport version of the mid year Vette might matter. 6 or 7 were built and 4 or 5 are accounted for but a Plain Jane everyday old car? I dunno why people bother with this stuff!!!!! Honestly I think this is another example of the hobby geting way too puffed up over itself. These are old cars, end of discussion.

Get over the rest of this nonsense and enjoy the car.

Its said that normal cars would be about 10 percent left, but given its a speciality car, not like a 4 door then I would think it would be more around 20 percent. Just a rough guess but we all know any Chevelle convertible is a rare piece to own.

With respect to DMVs knowing... As far as I know THEY don't know if it is a Coupe, Sedan, Stationwagon or Convertible. They would have to deciper the VIN. If I recall correctly there isnt anywhere on my DMV printout that sais what submodel it is.. I could be wrong.

9 years and FINALLY she's drivable, just in time for my first born son.

I totatally agree I wasn't saying that it was possible for the dmv which I believe would laugh at even the suggestion of counting them and to get all the states to agree to count them would literally take an act of congress and we know they have more important things to screw up. All I was saying if they gave you a count it would not tell you what you want to know because they would only count registered cars in the U.S.

Re: Does anyone know how many 1968 chevelle convertibles are left?

If you check the production numbers the concertible body style numbers dropped pretty much every year after 65. By 68 production was about 10,000 units. SS cars of course had their own VIN code. There is likely a greater percentage of these cars still around than the Malibu. From what I see for sale, 68 has to be one of the least represented years. I would guess there is a lower survivor rate overall.

No Man with a Good Car needs to be justified...
