Ignition switch won’t come out

I’ve been fighting a stubborn ignition switch for hours. I pulled the NK 4 steering wheel to replace the horn contacts. Since I had a sticking ignition switch I figured I’d replace it also since I had to tear into the column anyways. Problem is I can depress the tab on the old switch but it won’t pull out of the column. I’ve tried everything to get it out. Am I missing something like a hidden screw or hardware? It’s a 71 Chevelle and by the looks of the inside of the column, it’s probably original. Just so you know, the switch is in the OFF position. Any help will be deeply appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Re: Ignition switch won’t come out

Put the key in
Turn it to the unlocked position
Depress the tab
Pull out the assembly

Re: Ignition switch won’t come out

I've had some were pretty stubborn.

The little piece that you push down sorta teeter totters so you have to make sure you push it down in it's center.

Thanks for the suggestions. I guess I’ll fight with her I the morning. She’s whooped my butt enough today.

If Harold Richards is still running a shop in Florence, he's an experienced old GM mechanic. If worst comes to worst, try giving him a call.

Thank you. I’ll try and locate Harold and give him a call. He may be a member of a local car club nearby.

Re: Ignition switch won’t come out

Tried again but the switch won’t pull out. I’ve looked at videos and posts and tried everything to get it out. I can feel the detent compress and I can pull it out maybe 1/8-inch and then it stops. The plunger for the steering wheel lock is working correctly. Here’s something I haven’t seen on any video. Just to the right of the steering wheel lock is another opening with another mechanism that moves dependent upon the key position. It appears to be spring loaded. I have no idea what it is or what it does. This may be the culprit but I just don’t know. Any help out there in Chevelle Land? Thanks in advance.

Post a picture. Sometimes there is casting flashing that covers the hole that you need to be pushing thru. It is a slot shaped hole.

Re: Ignition switch won’t come out

Thanks. Yes there was but I knew about it in advance so it was chipped out first thing before I tried to remove the switch. I can feel the detent push in but I can’t pull the switch out.. What I’m not sure of is that 2nd mechanism to the right of the steering wheel lock pin. It may be the reason I can’t get the switch out. I’ll post a picture later. I put it back together again so we could take her for a Fourth of July cruise.

Re: Ignition switch won’t come out

I tried posting a pic but it requires an off site url location which I don’t have for photos. I store them all in the cloud. Maybe I can explain what I’m looking at. Just to the right of the plunger that extends and locks the steering wheel lock plate there is a square hole. Inside that hole is another plunger that moves with the key position. I have no idea what it’s function is or if it’s the reason I can’t remove the ignition switch. As I mentioned in my earlier posts, I can depress the ignition switch detent but I can’t pull the switch out. Thanks for any help.

I use the Taptalk app on my iPhone for posting pics (no need for off site URL location), it's really easy and about only thing Taptalk is good for IMO.
