So here’s my recent issue. When I start the car after it sits many days, no issues at all. After I get to the cruise night, enjoy the show for a few hours and get ready to go home.

When I start the car, it cranks really good initially, but then seems to stumble and stop. Smoke comes up through the cowl induction door and I immediately start it to suck it all down. Runs fine going home. This has happened at the last 3 events.
Plugs have about 100 miles on them. Engine has 400 miles since 454 rebuild. I’m using Lunati 60203 Hydraulic cam with a Pertronix II and coil. Holley 3310 780 vacuum secondary carb

Stumped where to start?

Check for fluid leaks.

Do you mean fuel leaks? Around Carb?
After it started on Sunday, I checked under the hood and didn’t see anything?

Re: Smoke start after shows

So the Engine does not have 500 Miles Breakin on it yet

Sounds to me like Unburnt Gas Fumes coming out of the Carb

Maybe running to Rich and Fuel left over in the Carb after driving to the Cruzin

Check the Spark Plugs now to see if they are wet/dark after a short drive

After 500 Miles Change Oil & Filter and Check Spark Plugs again

Changed the oil and plugs at 300 miles. I’ll pull the plugs to see what they look like? I’ll also check float levels again. Maybe one is too high?

Check the torque on the intake bolts. May be loose after initial heat/cool cycling.

No, oil leaks, particularly on the exhaust.

Re: Smoke start after shows

Tough one but my best guess would probably be fuel vapor lock issues, thinking when you turn off the car the fuel in the line from the pump boils and forces it's way into the intake and is causing a flooding issue, (probably why the issue goes away parked overnight). You might solve this problem by insulating you fuel line. Question: mechanical or electrical pump?

I have a stock mechanical fuel pump. The fuel is custom bent using a brass Y block that is above the valve cover, so I think it’s probably a little cooler the stock routing.

Re: Smoke start after shows

It sounds to me like the engine floods and gets choked off when started warm, then sucks the fuel vapors back into the engine when you re-start it. Almost certainly a carburetor/choke adjustment issue. You can lean out the choke on a Holley by loosening the three choke cover screws and rotating the housing clockwise.

Also, when starting a carbureted car cold, with an automatic choke (like yours, I see it in the photo) you press the accelerator pedal to the floor ONCE to provide a shot of fuel and set the choke. Car should fire right up immediately upon twisting the key.

On a warm engine, it should start without touching the accelerator pedal. If not, tap it lightly once while turning the starter over.

Also check your float levels, and you could possibly have a needle-and-seat issue.

Re: Smoke start after shows

Also, just looking at your engine photo, I see a wire going to the 12v terminal on your choke, but it's really hard to see if you have a ground wire on the other terminal? You definitely MUST have a ground wire for the choke to function properly. You probably have one and I just can't see it.
