HEI Module any difference in SB and BB

Is there a difference or does all the 4 pin modules fit all models. I have a 454 and put one that was for a 350 and the car actually runs worse.

Not only that the distributors are the same. The only thing that changes are the weights and center plates for stock ones.

Was the one you took from the 350 a GM module?

No got it from Autozone. Their brand. Had to raise the idle and the temp went up a lot. I actually think its defective.

Sounds like your timing is a little retarded, did you check it after installing the new module?

Module controls dwell which controls timing.

Re: HEI Module any difference in SB and BB

Took your advice. Timing mark no where near the tab almost at the 12 oclock position. Can a module make that drastic of a change ? She was running fairly decent before. wasn't running hot till this module change. Guess i'll pick up a name brand this time

Is it running better now? Yes, a module change can cause a change in timing.

Re: HEI Module any difference in SB and BB

Ordered one from Rockauto with a few other items. Real strange that the mark will move all the way up to 12 o'clock. Cam and timing chain less than 500 miles. Lunatti Voodoo

Dwell and timing are two different things.

The four terminal module adjusts the starting point of dwell to compensate for RPM and battery voltage, but the end of dwell (the ignition point) always stays the same (ie: when the reluctor wheel teeth passes by the pickup coil teeth).

Re: HEI Module any difference in SB and BB

Question. If vehicle was timed 18 degrees before TDC and ran great. then all of a sudden it ran like crap. Decided to change module and now timing mark at idle was in the 12 o clock position the only thing I can figure is the balancer slipped.

Re: HEI Module any difference in SB and BB

Distributor could have been loose and simply moved on you. Timing chain could have jumped a tooth (or more), distributor gear could have jumped a tooth (or more.)

Sounds like the module is not the problem from your description. To summarize what I read - it was running good with old module, then suddenly running bad with old module, switched module, still running bad, checked timing, timing way off.

I would pull the distributor and look for any funny business at the cam/distributor gear first.
