Interesting MSD 7AL2 problem

This week a racing buddy calls me up to work on his old J2000 turbo car. When I was talking with him he told me the MSD 7AL2 went out on his race car and was missing and blowing black smoke. I asked if he though it was the carb or ign problem and he stated for sure it was the MSD as it's pretty old. I asked if I could buy the old one and he said he will just give it to me as I never charge him to work on his car as he's had some medical issues and has been a good racing friend. We got his car done and he was going to put the new box on his car so he could go race. Today I put his old 7AL2 on my car to test it and after a bunch of wires all over the place I fire it up and the car runs great, matter of face runs better than the 6A does in my car. So I was kind of like what's wrong with this box?? well it turns out there must be something in the rev-limiter as when I put a 6K chip in it the car really ran bad. Ok, take out the chip and run it without as I never run one with my other box. Anyone ever had this happen to them with an MSD box with this kind of symptom?.

I have a new 7. Debating running it in a bbc street/strip deal. Any recommendations? It seems that it’s not ideal for street use. If that’s the case I’ll be selling it.

The only thing I would change is the coil, the pro power is not meant to be used on the street. It is only for drag racing short bursts otherwise I see no problem using the Digital 7 stuff all the time.

Re: Interesting MSD 7AL2 problem

For the street, if you absolutely MUST use a digital system, the 6 Digital is the one to use, NOT the full race 7 Digital.

Coil: any one that is oil filled, and NOT an MSD, or other disaster "performance" coil, and, none made in China.

Re: Interesting MSD 7AL2 problem

Just swapped over to the MSD Billet Distributor and a Blaster coil (all I have at this time) and the car does run much better. What a difference over the 30 year old HEI.

I was doing some research on the 7 that I have, is it true you can only use it’s settings for 12 seconds? Can someone that runs this on the st clarify? The system seems very odd. Parameters are set and controlled based on input time? Vs actual live data?

I have some friends that use the Digital 7 and have no trouble at the track with them, not sure about street usage. Do not run that pro power coil on the street though, they are not meant for long term use.
