Quality Points

I still run point distributors in a couple of my cars because they came that way and I like fiddling with them. As no surprise, it has become difficult to find quality made points now days. For those of you that still run points like me, what brand/part number do you recommend? Thanks

Re: Quality Points

It's probably been 40years since I ran points, but I remember running Standard Motor Products points and original GM points for a 69 z-28. with success. I think this is the one I used.

Here's a GM capacitor.........

At that price you should latch onto a few more if you like the results. No telling how long they will keep making them. I really didn't think I would find them, but low and behold....Amazon.

Re: Quality Points

Best advice, NEVER RUN A SET OF UNI-POINTS. If the condenser is mounted to the points, PASS ON IT.

Name brand points for a 70 Vette BBC.

Re: Quality Points

I use Accel points and never had any issues with them up to 6000 rpm... I bought 10 sets of them on eBay.. They are the older American made ones..

They seem to run best with copper core wires with soldered ends.. Radio and cell phones work just fine.. Brillman sells Packard 440 wire in spools..

With all the trouble people seem to have with the other ignitions, I am surprised more don't run points. They last forever triggering a MSD6AL or one of the other boxes..

Re: Quality Points

Another points issue, "filing" or "dressing" point contact faces, DON'T EVER DO THAT, EITHER. If the points are carbon built up, replace them, and clean the gro0und paths for the points and condenser to points plate, and make sure the points plate ground to vacuum advance wire is in place and functional. Points are TUNGSTEN COATED, when they are dressed, filing, sanding, incantations to the points Gods, whatever, removes that tungsten, causing the points faces to carbon build up faster.

Simple, if they look like they have stactites and stalagmites on them, replace them.

Re: Quality Points

I've had good luck with AC Delco parts, points, p/n 12338600, and condenser, p/n 12338665. As stated above, avoid the Uniset.
