How to clean off stuck grease

My Chevelle is a pretty solid car, there is no rust on the floor pans or frame. I'm trying to clean up the underside a bit, it has 50+ years of greasy stuff that is pretty thick. Last night I took some laquer thinner and it worked well with some elbow grease but I don't really want to disturb the paint beneath. I'm looking for suggestions on what to cut through the grime with. By the way, my floor pans are painted black, I thought I had seen on this site that they would be a primer red color. Looking at the underside it certainly looks like an untouched original.

Re: How to clean off stuck grease

I used gas in areas on my undercarriage to get the heavy stuff off. It's good at cutting thru undercoat. My floor pans had a red primer look to them. After I sprayed the undercarriage black you can still see the red primer through the holes in the trunk braces.

What kind of gas?

I used a propane torch and a putty knife but mine was a combination of old grease and undercoating.

Regular Grade. He's trying not to damage the bottom using a putty knife. It's OK to hit it with a putty knife too as long as you don't try to take it down to the panel itself. On mine I knew I was going to paint it black and it wasn't too bad to start with so areas I felt I needed to use gas I did. After that I scuffed the surface with a wheel that looks like red scotchbrite pad then wiped it down with a PPG degreaser and the rattle canned the whole bottom.

Re: How to clean off stuck grease

I use kerosene for though jobs like that. I also use it in my parts washer. I'm sure gasoline would work too, but I can't stand the smell of it.

Re: How to clean off stuck grease

I used a needle scaler on two Chevelle floor pans then paint thinner. The scaler removes undercoat, thinner removes anything that is left. They look like new.
