Shifter Boot - How to Restore to Black?

I just got my '67 and the floor shift (no console) rubber(?) boot is in great condition except that it has turned grayish instead of black. Can someone recommend a treatment to restore it? I absolutely DON'T want it shiny (think Armorall) or "greasy" feeling. I have a bottle of Chemical Guys Silk Shine Treatment for tires and interior trim, but a I haven't tried that yet. Does anyone have a suggestion? Thanks.

Too late to edit.

I would just buy a new boot, but I can't seem to find a match. It's a Hurst flat-style handle; the boot/ring is about 6.25" x 4.5". Here's a pic.

It almost looks like a Camaro boot. I think even a new boot is going to have that gray look till you use some kind of protectant on it.

Re: Shifter Boot - How to Restore to Black?

OK, it really is new because the build only has 400 miles on it, so maybe that's it. I also have some 303 Protectant, so I'll try that or the Chemical Guys stuff and see what happens. Thanks, Hank.

You could try some Mothers Back To Black.

Re: Shifter Boot - How to Restore to Black?

All the above are good suggestions. I use Back To Black on the black plastic cladding on the daily driver and it is more appropriate than a silicone-based protectant in this application IMHO. It also gives a clean black look without being shiny

I would also like to add to the list, black shoe polish. Smear it on, rub it in then buff off. I'm not sure how well it will soak in relative to leather vs. rubber, but there is black dye in it and I would not rule out trying it.

Isn't the grayish stuff release agent from the mold?

Take it off, then start with washing it in soap and warm water, and blotting it dry. Let it sit and see how it looks. I would use a tire product, and let it get too shiny, but then wipe it down a day later, and maybe soap and water again to clear off excess.

Re: Shifter Boot - How to Restore to Black?

I have a set of green reproduction rubber mats in my car. They were so chalky looking they almost looked white. I used a PPG degreaser on them that removed the chalkiness and then used some Meguiars wipes on them. That was over a year ago and they seem to be holding up with no chalkiness returning.

Re: Shifter Boot - How to Restore to Black?

Thanks, guys. A lot of good ideas. Since it is new, maybe that is a release agent. I wondered about shoe polish, myself, the other day. I'll try some of those things when I get some time, and I'll post some before and after pics. Thanks, again.

Re: Shifter Boot - How to Restore to Black?

I think we're pretty sucessful, thanks to you guys and your suggestions. I removed the boot (turns out it's a round-shifter boot), cleaned it with Dawn dish detergent which helped. Next was a wipe-down with denatured alcohol which really cleaned things up. Finally, the Chemical Guys Silk Shine Treatment did a really nice job, no excessive shine or greasy feel. In fact, it's dry to the touch as it goes on. BTW, I ordered new Hurst handle #7436 because the chrome is not plated all the way down and the boot doesn't cover it.

Before, after Dawn, after denatured alcohol and the Silk Shine Treatment, and two views after reinstallation
