Streak Free Glass

Thought I should start a thread seeing as how I was the one whining that we needed this forum.
What is your method for producing streak free glass? To this point I have gotten the best results with polish. Just the regular polish that one would use on their paint. I happen to use Klasse- All In One but any polish would work.

Re: Streak Free Glass

Yah, I guess I should have added that I use it on the inside of the windows as well as the outside. Put in on with a sponge or applicator. Allow it to dry for 5 or 10 minutes and buff it off with a microfiber.

Re: Streak Free Glass

Great question. I've been looking for something other than windex. I've got a new glass top stove and the scrub/polish kit that's designed for those black tops work very well. Might try that.

Re: Streak Free Glass

I've used very fine steel wool(0000) on my exterior glass, works great, just keep it on the glass.Use Invisible glass on the glass in and out first, using micro fiber towels seem to work great for me.

Re: Streak Free Glass

Something else that will not harm or mark your glass is " BRASS steel wool ".

Re: Streak Free Glass

I agree with Bob...brass wool (fine) and newspaper. It seems like I read once that there is something about the ink on the paper that helps clean glass w/o streaks. Whatever it is, it works for me. The brass wool won't hurt the glass and i have found it works to get bugs off the reveal moldings, too.

Re: Streak Free Glass

I have never tried newspaper but I did read somewhere that the ink they use these days is not the same as the ink from decades past. That is if you still have a paper version of a newspaper available.
I think the brass wool would do the job. I know I tried a few years ago to remove so fine scratches in a rear window with 0000 steel wool and polish as polish is a mild abrasive. I worked at it for a couple hours and made zero progress. So guess what I am trying to say is the 0000 steel wool won't damage your glass either.

Wow, that post transported me way back to Basic Combat Training and cleaning the barrack's shower stall with newspaper... Does the ink from the news print run? Seems to me that was an issue back in 1970...

Re: Streak Free Glass

I won't buy a newspaper just for this and have had news print of any kind in the house for longest time since I only ever read 10% of it. But I have seen this work.

I'll second your favourite glass cleaner plus a terry cloth buffing. The glass must be DRY first for the buffing and find using some papertowel to dry the window after the glass cleaner is applied helps. Back lighting the glass you are working on helps avoid missing spots when buffing.

Question - do you wax your glass?

Re: Streak Free Glass

Seems like we're getting to a point where the younger generation will never get to experience the usefulness of newspaper. It does work well on windows.

My 2 favorite cleaners for glass are Spray Away and Invisible glass. At work, we go through quite a bit. We quit buying Invisible glass because too many of the cans were defective. I always use 2 towels or micro fiber if I have them. First to clean, second to polish away any film.

On a car, you don't want to get any glass cleaner on the finish. Most will strip or damage sealant, wax, or surface treatment.

Re: Streak Free Glass

Remember the homeless dudes running up with newspaper and gutter water then cleaning your windows when stopped at a stoplight? I use to pay them not to touch my car. Hey, I had some respect for them. At least they were working for a living.

Re: Streak Free Glass

I have been using a 50-50 mixture of 91% isopropyl alcohol and distilled water. It works quite well.

And on that note, if you mix 2/3 91% isopropyl alcohol with 1/3 distilled water, it is a very fast way to deice your windows. Spray it on and the ice disappears. The isopropyl alcohol has a very low freeze point (-128 F), so the windows stay clear (you will probably have to use your wipers, but no ice).
