Question Exhaust tips?

Exhaust tips? Do you think a 71 looks better with the tips out the back with the factory style? Or maybe tucked up out behind the tire with just a little bit of pipe showing, kind of like on the early Camaros or Nova? I was wondering, what most people go for? Here is a picture of mine, I was worried that you can see too much pipe?

Re: Exhaust tips?

I like them however the factory did the, so on a '69-'72, they way yours are would be my choice.

It is a rare man who can count his own blessings and not mistake them for personal achievements.

Re: Exhaust tips?

I'm kinda debating this myself. Just installed a Pypes exhaust on my 68 and I still have the full length of the pipe coming past the bumper. Haven't decided on what tips and where I want them to come out yet so I haven't cut them down yet.

There's no right or wrong here, just opinions...but I always felt that '69-'72 SS tips looked out of place on a '68. A turndown angled slightly out toward the corner of the bumper like the factory did still looks right on a '68 to me.
Which Pypes system did you install if you don't mind me asking?

Re: Exhaust tips?

In my opinion the big factory chromed oval tips are ugly and gaudy. Some may take offense to this but that is my opinion. Not everything they designed back in the day was a winner. They should be heard but not seen.

Re: Exhaust tips?

I think exhaust tips and where a exhaust exits is just like putting stripes on a car. If the car didn't come from the factory with stripes or with a exhaust exiting under the rear bumper it just doesn't look right. When I had my 69 Camaro I had put a Flowmaster exhaust system on it. The kit had the pipes that exited under the rear valance like a 69 Z-28 had. I never liked that look so I cut the pipes so they exited more behind the rear tire.

So do you have hangers in the rear or how is it being held coming past the axle?

It has the rods welded to the pipe and then blocks that are welded to the outside of the frame rail with the rubber bushings inside. You can see the block in the picture. On a 68 from the factory the tailpipes extended to the back of the car. At the very end they turned to the outside and down right towards the corner of the fender and bumper.
