Re: 1966 Chevelle How to tell what Window Glass you had originally ?

All clear glass was standard. You could order a tinted windshield only, or you could order all tinted glass. If your side and back glass are original and are tinted, then the windshield was too. If the side and back glass are original and are NOT tinted, then the windshield could have been clear or tinted.

Contrary to popular belief, ordering AC did not automatically include tinted glass. You had to pay extra to get the tinted glass, regardless of whether you did or did not order AC. It is true however that it is common to find both options on the same car.

As noted above depending on which plant it was built at, the window type may be on the trim tag. Post up a pic! It is not listed on the POP though.

Re: 1966 Chevelle How to tell what Window Glass you had originally ?

I emailed the original owner to see if he remembers ?
The Car I think is some what of a striped SS as the owner wanted it to race / street use.
It came through with no console, idiot lights/non gauge dash, drum brakes all around no power steering bucket seats 4-speed 396-360hp no-A/C
The original owner told me he had the dealer change the rear end from 331 I think he said to 411 before he would buy it. I cant post pictures on this site as I am not in any type of social media sites, unless you know away around it ?
I had a 1966 GTO Pontiac had a Historical site that if you sent them the Vin, they would send you a Build sheet. Is there any site like that for Chevy ?
I can send pictures of glass to personal emails if you think that would help ?

Re: 1966 Chevelle How to tell what Window Glass you had originally ?

I emailed the original owner and I would assume by his email I have Clear ?
This is Paul's response copy and pasted it.

I really can't remember. But, It is my belief that I most likely had normal untinted side and rear window.
The windshield may have been tinted up top. Sort of a dark blue at the very top, then a gradual fading
to clear below the blue. But I was pretty cheap in those days, so I may not have had any tint on the
windshield at all. I would not have paid extra for tinting on any side or rear window. I remember that
back in those days, I drove a lot with the sun visors down. Didn't need to look at the sky. So it's even
doubtful that the windshield had any tint. I think that the tint in those days was more to go along with
air conditioning. I was so cheap that I didn't even opt for the center console. The space between the
bucket seats was for the fire extinguisher.

My vent windows do not say soft ray so i would assume there clear ?

2nd email from original owner...of my 66 chevelle SS
Clint, I most likely ordered the '66 Chevelle as such. SS 396, 360hp
option. 4-speed trans, bucket seats,
posi rear axle, am radio. No console, no extra gauges, no power
steering, no power brakes, nothing special
as far as windshield wipers / washers, no wheelcovers (plain taxi cab
type). It was bare bones, except for
what it took to make it "go".

Re: 1966 Chevelle How to tell what Window Glass you had originally ?

If your side glass is tinted then it will have a logo etched on it that indicates it is tinted. If memory serves, it will say "Soft-Ray".

I don't think you have to be a "member of social media" to post pics here! There's a place to drag and drop a picture in the window that pops up when you are typing a post. Post a pic of the trim tag on the firewall and we might be able to tell you for sure. Or if you can't post a pic, then type out all the information on the tag and post that.

There might even be an E on the cowl behind the drivers side indicating all tinted glass. Cowl tag looks to have been removed at some time. Indicates 4sp, no console, buckets, no tinted windshield or other glass.

Re: 1966 Chevelle How to tell what Window Glass you had originally ?

Hi James
Yes the tag was removed prior to painting firewall blue and also by me as the firewall is now back to black. The Car came with the protecto plate in the original owners manual. I was able to track down the original owner using it. He thought the Car had clear glass, I think I am going to go with tinted glass for the windshield ? I was looking for information as to what others would use for glass Very torn BUT the Car now has Power Disc front Brakes and power steering. I kept all original parts Not sure why But I did. LOL
Very Hard to find a Car in this Kind of Shape in New England..!
