1967 SS Under Restoration

I purchased this car in summer of 2015. It was purchased new at Rowe Chevrolet-Buick in Louisburg, NC. I have all the documentation with the car. Sales contract, window sticker, POP, original title etc.. The prior owner purchased the car from the original owner and began a body off restoration. New NOS drivers quarter, New trunk, Rt. Quarter, rear panel and rear window panel were installed by Hopkins in Georgia (excellent work). I just now got to where I had time to finish the car. It is now in the paint shop and as of the time I am typing this the front fenders and both doors are in paint and the hood and trunk lid will be painted this week.
Car is a true original all number matching 49543 mile car. The car sat in a shed with the rear exposed to the elements, thus rotting the rear of the car. The Alternator, Starter, Water Pump, and Carburetor had been changed when the prior owner began the restoration. I have located the correct dated Starter, Water Pump, and Alternator. I am still looking for a Jan. 1967 Quadrajet for manual transmission. Also missing is a 3 speed shifter with a bench seat handle, I have aquired a NOS Hurst Syncro Loc 3 speed shifterr still in the original box, I plan to use this for now. From evidence in the floor it appears a different shifter boot was installed making me question if the owner had not added an aftermarket shifter at some point. I have owned several 67's thru the years. I have aquired all NOS Chrome and emblems for this car with the exception of a trunk lid moulding. This included the outer window fuzzies and NOS wheel covers.
There are a few details that are incorrect that will need to be corrected, these will be addressed.
I'll keep you guys updated of the progress as we progress.

Re: 1967 SS Under Restoration

Update: Tonite I was changing the camshaft, I had removed the engine over the weekend. The prior owner gave me the name of the person who rebuilt the engine, he was most informative. He said the engine had all new parts, bored .30 with new pistons, crank polished, new valves, seats, springs, rocker arms and nuts. However he did say he used the original cam because it showed very little wear. After removing the cam I see why. Somewhere it had been changed, they replaced it with what is correct for a 65 and 66 model 396 block. See the groove in the rear journal, the rear bearing also has a groove to match. This is for oiling purposes and was redsigned in the 67 and later blocks. Just an FYI for those who may not know this. As of know the engine has a new Crane 396/350h.p. spec. camshaft and lifters.

Also as an added update they had installed later model engine mounts. The correct mounts were made by Anchor and can still be purchased. Summit has them for around $10.00 each. The Anchor mount is on the right in the photo, replacements on the left. See 2249 AHN on the correct mount.

I am including photos of a NOS rear axle vent and correct water neck.

I'll keep you guys posted as progress continues.

Re: 1967 SS Under Restoration

Had time to work on the driveshaft, I was originally going to send the driveshaft to Quanta, they are no longer doing restorations of driveshafts. I stripped this with a stripping disk on a 4 1/2inch grinder. I then sanded it with a grey scotch brite pad. I put the part number on at an angle, the originals I have seen were never exactly straight. I taped and then used testors model paint on the stripes. Most of the original stripes I have uncovered had brush marks in them. One last Item yet to do, clean the welds and apply Gun Blue to them, this will give them a more correct appearance. Lastly coat of satin clear for protection.

Re: 1967 SS Under Restoration

Here is photos of the original oil pressure wire clip. Notice it was installed with the hook facing inward toward the block. Also notice the lack of paint indicating it was installed prior to paint. Also notice the triangle stamp next to the bolt hole.

Looking good!

The oil line clip and bolt were assembly line parts, so would be installed at the car plant, not at the Tonawanda engine plant. (See U14 in the AIM.) So they should not have any orange on them. Someone must have spritzed the top of the engine in the car with some fresh paint somewhere along the way.

Keep up the good work -- can't wait to see another nice finished 67!

Re: 1967 SS Under Restoration

Some updates from the weekend. Cleaned fan getting ready for repainting, notice how the original paint had runs and smudge on it. Rear Axle is a CF code posi with a build date of 01/26 at the Buffalo plant , also the positraction notice on the fill plug the letters are imprinted into the plastic, the new ones are screen printed (anyone know who has correct one?) I may try to recondition this one. Misc. pictures of the dash cluster, radio etc. Also notice how the door jamb swithes have two different codes.

Making progress. Doing a lot of little things waiting on Painter to get the body painted so we can begin putting it back togeather.
