Correct radiator shroud for 1970 SS-396 with A/C

I'm trying to figure out if I have the correct radiator shroud on my 1970 SS-396 with a/c and auto trans. The shroud lines up perfectly with the mounting holes & clips and with the fan. The passenger side of the shroud goes to the inner side of the radiator tank, but the driver side of the shroud doesn't extend to the inner edge of the radiator side tank--it ends about 2-3" before the tank. (In other words, the shroud doesn't cover 2-3" of the radiator core on the driver side.) The picture in the assembly manual appears to show this as correct, but it seems strange that the shroud doesn't cover the entire core. Anyone know if this is correct? Thanks a lot!

That's the way they fit. Read this one and see the pictures near the end.

Re: Correct radiator shroud for 1970 SS-396 with A/C

Why do they NOT cover all of the Rad on a 70 ? Give a listen: First year for the 454 engines, The G.M. folks designed the shroud, Tested it and it worked. Lets get the new body design done and start building cars.
The 70 shroud was designed for a purpose and thats is why it has an open area on the left side. At the time Chevy Engineers were not sure if this shroud would work worldwide. Look behind the open area on a 70 B.B. shroud and what do you see. ( If so equipped) A power steering pump, That gets hot and needs cool air, Also an A-6 A/C compressor that needs cool air. The question was? Will these items get enough direct air flow? All Cars do not have P.S. & A/C, This design should work Bubba.............
A lot of Chevy designs were not pure science, But a lot of trial and error. They found out, NO issues with the P.S. pump or the A/C compressor, So lets change the design ( 1971) and see if, We cover ALL the heat exchanger with a shroud and see if that design will work.
A lot of items designed by the big three, Were cross you fingers and pray.

Thanks for the explanation, Bob. I "guessimated" there was a reason the shroud didn't cover all of the core, but didn't know the reason.

Re: Correct radiator shroud for 1970 SS-396 with A/C

I replaced the shroud on my (69 which is the same as 70) with a 71-72 shroud which covers the complete radiator and use a bigger fan blade.
Unfortunately that didn't make the engine run much cooler though.

A/C compressor are cooled by the refrigerant coming back to them.
