One more thought to add to Jeff's detailed response.....Since all BBC fitted engines used in chevelles came from Tonawanda, and I believe all fitted engines shipped with the dipstick, the theory re: the vendor source might have to be given more debate.
The dipstick tube and dipstick were NOT installed at Tonawanda. They are a car assembly line part, shown in the AIM. Hence the potential for plant-by-plant variances.
