Original color for 66 ss under cowl area

Hello all, I'm currently restoring a 1966 Chevelle SS and I'm at the point where I want to paint the firewall. I got the GM reconditioning black chassis paint for it, the inner fenders and radiator support. Since I'll have the fenders, hood, and cowl panel off, I wanted to paint the underside of the cowl and the surrounding area of the firewall. Would I paint this are the same GM black as well?

Thanks Much

Corey

Re: Original color for 66 ss under cowl area

I didnít know the side of the cowl and under the cowl was body color. I guess the trick is to leave the hood and cowl and paint as much as I can with body color.
I wanted to paint as much as I can with the black first.
Thanks guys.

Re: Original color for 66 ss under cowl area

Perfect pic, thanks. I guess leaving the doors off when I paint is the way to do it.
I love the way you detailed everything. Great job.

Whaddaya mean "top notch"? There's no overspray on that motor! (yeah - that's the way I like it too!)

All kidding aside; that car looks so well done.

Re: Original color for 66 ss under cowl area

The more I look at that picture, the more I'm convinced the best way to paint mine is to remove the fenders, doors, cowl and paint the body color parts separately. Then paint the firewall and black parts and assemble everything back together. I don't know how I would get coverage on all if it otherwise.

Car pictured by Keith B is mine. To be 100% correct it should not be so neatly painted (and yes engine/exhaust manifolds should have overspray visible. GM’s paint procedures varied greatly by assembly plant, and the firewall area was not masked off, it was sprayed by a human on an assembly line, so each car can be slightly different. The outer sides of the firewall is just heavy overspray, with body color very visible, same as the upper edge at cowl. Some assembly plants painted up to the very top edge, some barely above the horizontal seam that is filled with seam sealer.

Thanks, I struggle with factory overspray..... I know it should be there, so I do overspray certain areas, but my OCD will not let me go extreme with it, I prefer neatly “over restored” as opposed to messy “correct” factory.
