66 outside drivers mirror template

Trying to clear up my mirror placement. I donít see anything in the AIM. When and where were the outside door mirror installed?

The reason I ask is because the mirror on the 66 I just got is kind of installed in the wrong location according to a mirror templates I have seem. Maybe it was installed after a long weekend. Anyway here is a photo. All indications are that itís the origional door. Maybe a new outside skin was installed; but if so it was a long time ago with original spot-welds, seam sealer, and type of insulation. But Iíve learned to never say never.

Here is a photo from inside the door panel, I think the location is about 3/4Ē to low. Take a look and tell me what you think.

I would say the holes in the brace above the screws are the original mounting holes. The large hole is for a remote controlled mirror cables.

That was my thought. But I think this was done at the factory unless a new skin was put on a long time ago. I wonder why the outer skin on the original door or skin was not pre-drilled. Or maybe it was and the hole were bonded shut, doesn't look like the hole in the reinforcement piece were ever used.

Can the current holes be welded shut and new holes made where they should be?

My thought also; but why so far off unless the holes were damaged and they decided to weld shut and drill new hole. But at the time this would have been done I would have thought they just filled the holes with some kind of plastic filler.

I am never positive about anything; but everything about the door says it came from the factory. All physical signs point to original. Every nut and bolt Ive found looks original except the top, front and rear seat upholster, convertible top, and carpet. And of course some hoses and belts.

Passenger doors were not drilled for mirror; but have the backing plate. I would think that when the drivers door skin was made with the backing plate was applied the doors, inner core they would have drilled the holes. Mistakes have been made along the line before.

I know in a older post Jelf Helms outlined the differences of all the doors.

I remember something about that, door lock, some shapes of inner part. etc.
In that post I don't think I saw anything about mirrors. Maybe that was in a different post.

Re: 66 outside drivers mirror template

I don't have my AIM handy,it's @ my shop but if I remember correctly the accesory section in the rear of the AIM shows locations for right side mirror.
When I installed mine I compared those locations to the left side mirror and I'm pretty sure they were the same, correct me if I'm wrong.

That first photo of the inside looks just like mine except the two holes are down lower. Another member has just PM me that his drivers mirror is also installed like mine. His is a 67 chevelle and in the restoration process has moved his mirror up. Mine is a late Nov of 65 Kansas City build. Just recently saw a door just exactly like yours at our Chevelle Club meeting here in Mpls, mn.
