correct fasteners for license plate bracket to rear bumper 66

Can't seem to find what fasterners/ bolts were used to attach the rear license plate bracket to the rear bumper. Anyone know the correct ones for 66? Thanks

Her is a photo of bolts removed that were holding license bracket and bumper reinforcement bracket to rear bumper. Bumper had been previously removed and re-chromed, so no rivets. The one RWB might be correct. No idea when the DD bolt was use or the US bolt.

Re: correct fasteners for license plate bracket to rear bumper 66

All the originals I have seen had no strength hash marks on them (makes sense since those bolts aren't subjected to much stress), with a P in the center or RBW along the very edge. So I would guess that if any of those in the pic are the originals it would be the two with the CS right on the edge and no hash marks.

Re: correct fasteners for license plate bracket to rear bumper 66

Thanks Jeff, this is a Kansas car if that means anything. All the bumper bracket bolts, washers, body mounts & hardware, and gas tank & straps and & bolts, etc appear to be original except for the hardware attaching the bumper. Bumper has been straightened and rebchomed so rivets attaching reinforcement bracket were replaced with bolts along with bumper attachment bolts, etc.

Re: correct fasteners for license plate bracket to rear bumper 66

I guess I was looking at the SW page for the license plate. Part number is 9419872 BOLT according to UPC 14 B1. Nut is AMK has. Can't find the bolt anywhere. I did find this information about the bolt

Nut is gm 271172, amk says this is a 1/4" keps nut and have different finishes available for a 1/4-20 kept nut. Wondering if bolt is a screw with a washer attached or just a 1/4" bolt with washer or a flanged bolt. Time to find a 66 with original bumper and license plate bracket.

Re: correct fasteners for license plate bracket to rear bumper 66

On all originals I have seen, IIRC the bolts are just regular 1/4 bolts, and the nuts are regular solid hex nuts. Will double check next time I'm out in the garage though.

https://www.amkproducts.com/wp-conte...BULK_39-54.pdf

B-12814 page 53, Gm 271172. Factory worker could just as well grabbed a 1/4” hex nut.

Re: correct fasteners for license plate bracket to rear bumper 66

Well would you know it, bought bolts and fasteners, went to install the bracket and license plate and I had put the original bolts and fasteners back on the bracket, so I wouldn't loose them. Jeff is correct again. 1/4 bolts, 1/2" long, plane head with no grade markings, The letter P on the head. Keps nuts

Jim, I too had this scenario. I went to hardware store and bought proper hole sized (offhand I don't remember the size) stainless steel hex head bolts. Then I took them to a lathe and made the hex head round by removing the hex, then faced off the bolt head markings. Use a lock washer and nut to install.

Now they look like a rivet from the outside!

Mistake I posed this in response to my post on the reinforcement bracket.

te]. I just finished this project. I bought 5/16 x 3/4 stainless carriage bolts with the SS caps from AMK. The head side was 3/4”. The are identical to the SS caped bumper bolts that AM K sells, I ground off the square part so they fit flush. I hadn’t thought of making my own bolt with a head that looks like a rivet. Good idea!

Re: correct fasteners for license plate bracket to rear bumper 66

Glad you found them!

I forgot to post earlier that I checked a few of my unrestored cars and they did all have the nuts with the attached "star" washers.
