Re: Original Black Master Cylinders

I think I believe the guy that was there.

And I continue to believe that they could be Cast Gray or Black.

If you'd like to call out Richard D. in person, he'll be at the Maryland Chevelle Show and the Northern Ohio Chevelle Show,

but be prepared to get a Black left eye from him to match your collection of master cylinders.

Perhaps you should read Jerry's post #2.

Re: Original Black Master Cylinders

So the fact that Jeff showed you a engineering drawing of a mater cylinder from Delco with the finishing spec of black paint means nothing. You must never worked in manufacturing and worked with prints

Re: Original Black Master Cylinders

I've never seen a build spec on the rearend assemblies but it would make sense that the rears were painted for protection after assembly and before palletizing, yet there are plenty out there that never received black paint. Not an exact comparison, but the thought that chevy and their suppliers were cutting corners to spit the product out makes perfect sense in my mind. It still happens today, very similar to the shipping spec of spray cosmoline. You can witness 20 new cars and get wide degrees of coverage, and some are completely devoid. You can make the statements Jeff is trying to make, but when absolutes are prescribed and jammed down our throats I start pushing back. The hobby tends to listen to those of authority, and Jeff is one of them. This type of thing has made it's way into judging guidelines and should, but it gets quite sticky when a judge tells you a procedure is incorrect and you as a restorer know without a doubt YOUR car came a different way. Now what, do you take it, or do you feel obligated to research and debate? Kind of takes the fun right out of it.

Please link this engineering drawing.

Also, has GM EVER been known to change things year to year, and even mid-year through production?

Re: Original Black Master Cylinders

Jerry if you took notice to GM policy on finishes they always tried to have things under the hood look good for when the car was new like nothing rusting Under the car they where not so worried about. There are many unrestored cars out there of all models with black m/c and even NOS ones

Sure GM and any other car manufacturer wanted the best looking product....within the cost parameters, nothing new. There's quite a few raw cast and raw bare metal parts visible from under the hood. Now you have a serviceable part, the master, that constantly will have paint remover spilled over and around it. That looks quite nasty over time. What better way to eliminate that ugly mess than just not painting the master? As for NOS, off-the-shelf parts, they received part numbers, paint, and sometimes some sort of cosmoline unlike assembly line pieces. No one wants to buy a flash rusted part off the shelf. Let's focus on assembly line practices.

On what date was this written, for what plant, and where does the word "Chevelle" appear?

Re: Original Black Master Cylinders

It's for the "309" 1 1/8" bore master used from '67-'69 in chevelle, chevy II, Camaro and Pontiac F bodies, not certain about Pontiac A bodies??
That's a great document and certainly prescribes how it was "supposed" to be done.

Great info if you own one of those model cars.

Is there proof that GM NEVER decided they were wasting money painting Master Cylinders just to have customers complain that the paint fell off or rusted?

That document is dated May of 1968.
