66 quarter panel extension

Re-doing my extensions and noted the inside back end of the housing is painted silver.

Did GM originally paint this area silver, and if so - why not white? White would make more sense to me.

Its silver to project the light from the bulb out to the lens. Like what is done in headlights.

Given a choice - I would think white would reflect more light than silver. But it appears the General didn't think so.....
