A friend of mine has a 68 SS dash. In the area between the pods, instead of a rectangular plate that says 'Chevelle', it has a rolling tach. The needle is stationary and the numbers are on a drum that revolves. Is this a factory option? If so, is it rare? desirable? What do you think the tach is worth?

That's the "Roller Tach". IT was offered just that 1 year and while it's kind of unique, I don't know of many people who really like it as a std face tach is easier to read at a glance.

It's both a factory and a dealer option. It's also fairly rare, and very expensive.

If you're able to find one, expect to pay $200 and up, depending on the condition, redline, and if it has the bezel and lens included.

Thanks for the reply. This is in a complete dash that is in good condition. I was wondering what a good EBAY price would be for this.

The tach is expensive and a good option to install on your car. The numbers dont roll up though. The pointer does. Expect to get 300.00 or so if you sell the whole dash, and the tach works. CHRIS

I have three of these tachs, two with different readlines. I got one on ebay a while back for $100 + shipping. It works great, but they are very hard to see, except at night. I put an Autometer Super Comp tach on the column, covering it up because it's much easier to see and read. Also because I went to HEI. I think that you have to mod the old tachs to accomadate the HEI.

Re: 68 Chevelle Tach

I'm working on a 68 chevelle, and am trying to find an original tach for it. Please let me know if you still have one of these tachs. I would be interested in purchasing one.

Thanks!

Speaking of 68 Tachs... Am I reading correctly that a dealer may add the vertical tach? If this is the case would the dealer replace all the idiot lights with gauges? I have seen a car or two that has the tach, but also has idiot lights. I assumed this guy probably just added the tach. Also should the gauges option show on the window sticker?

Thanks
Mark

I'm no expert on the tach issue, but I recall there being different PN#s for standard instrumentation (idiot lights) depending on transmission type (auto/manaul/column/floor shift). There was another level called full instrumentation (actual gauges) again based on type transmission. Clocks were option on either package. The tach would be in the center, PN 6468823and trimmed with a chrome bezel, and from what I have read and learned, which could be incorrect, was that you could only get the tach with the full instrumentation, not with idiot lights. Though I am sure there are some cars out there now with tach's and idiot lights, because it could be done and they did it. While the gauge carrier was different to house the tach, the outer bezel used was the same for all packages, only the center section would be cut out to expose the tach, then trimmed with the tach bezel.

I would buy a tach dash as well if you get a nice one for a decent price!
