Re: Trans turbo 400

I have a TH400 short shaft out of a 74 1/2 ton pickup that had a 454 up front - in my 65 Elky. It replaced the Powerglide and I had to cut a couple of inches from the driveshaft - FWIW. The only mods were the new front yoke and had to move the trans crossmember back a few inches.

OLDED - It's STOCK if it's made by GM and it fits!

Re: Trans turbo 400

I have an RV 454 turbo 400, it takes a bolt in yoke unless you swap out the end shaft, unless you know your way around the inside of a trans you could either take it to trans shop and have it changed, which I think since my trans is out that's what I'm going to do or get a bolt in "truck style" yoke. My body guy has a SBC S-10 that he races and he thinks that is a weak spot, you might want to think about a drive shaft safety loop also.

Re: Trans turbo 400

I would look for a BBC with a roller cam already in it, retro fit cams are a bit pricey, I think SBC started using roller cams in 87? but not sure on BBC, mine is an 86 hft, taking my trans to a trans shop tomorrow to get the shaft changed, I had a drive shaft made and bought a $90 bolt in yoke so I'm in the shaft around $350, that I'm not going to use LOL. And one day hoping to change to an overdrive trans.

Re: Trans turbo 400

if your still thinking on using the truck T-400, I took mine to a local trans shop and they wanted $300 to change the tail shaft and that was if they didn't find any other problems in the tranny?, $2000 for a built 700r4 with a corvette servo, different clutches, 2200-2500 rpm convertor, cut and redo my drive shaft, I have to buy the TV cable and new shifter and they install it, think I'm going that route so you could use the T-400 or think about something in the overdrives.

Re: Trans turbo 400

Before all the expense and hassle of changing the output shaft look into a TH400 front DS yoke made for his purpose. Its counterbored just for this. Bought a ready made shaft from PST with this yoke. M trans is a truck trans with the threaded hole in the end.

I am doing the same with a TH425 out of a RV but am wondering if there is some where else to purchase the yoke.

Re: Trans turbo 400

Would changing the tail housing be needed?

Re: Trans turbo 400

I didn't think a bolt-in yoke would work on a Chevelle... The driveshaft needs to slip somewhere, either the front yoke or an intermediate slip-joint...

Once you go RAT, you never go back...

Re: Trans turbo 400

I didn't know anyone made that yoke, sounds like the best fix, I guess it's long enough not to fall out if the rear gets up high?
