rear end gears

i am rebuilding 66 chevelle ss. too far gone to call it restoration. i am putting chevy 383 with tremec tko600 trans. i have a 12 bolt rear end with 3:31 gm gears. i believe rear end has been done before cuz looks way to fresh and all is good. my question, are these gears gonna perform for street use? im not racing car, its a cruiser. im about to put suspension and front end back together so any changes i want to do now. also, does anyone know the original colors for front end parts? specfically the dust shields and caliper mounting brakets. thanks.

Re: rear end gears

Two ways to look at the gears-

Figure your desired cruise speed and rpm, and calculate how close these gears get to it.

Or, figure our your quarter mile max speed desired/guestimated, and increase the gear ratio so you achieve it.

Those are opposite setups.

My guess is that 331's are a losing the benefits of the tko on both ends, and you could go to 355 or 373's and still have a decent cruise rpm.

66 Malibu Coupe, home rebuilt 350. Took me 39 years to get her!

Re: rear end gears

The 3.31 is a great gear for a cruiser. It's good on the highway and good in town too.

Re: rear end gears

I missed that part. I guess it will depend on the cam, intake, carb, headder size and tire diameter. It could still work well if the engine is built more for torque. There were many Caprices with 305 engines, 700R4 transmissions and 2.73 rear ends that did all right on the highway.
