Muncie M21 buying help needed

Hi Guys. Found a rebuilt Muncie M21 for sale. Outside looks clean, asked the guy to open it up and found what looks like some bad wear on the engagement gears. I am new to this so not sure if this wear is a serious issue or not. See pics below. The guy is asking $1800 what do you guys think? Thanks!

Re: Muncie M21 buying help needed

My car had a bad leak it ended up being the front bearing retainer on the transmission that had 3 out of 4 screws that were stripped and the retainer was separating from the transmission. I took it to a shop and to go thru the whole thing it was going to cost me at least $1200. Instead I bought a brand new Autogear M22W. Total new heavier duty case and all new internals $2000.

Is that in USD? I’m in Canada and the exchange is terrible right now.

To the Op, no expert here. Those smaller teeth do look pretty well shot in the pictures, lots of missed power shifts over the years. I'd wonder how the sliders look on the inside too. That transmission might jump out of gear from the looks. Keep looking. Those gearboxes are 50 years old or so.

$1,800.00 is not realistic. Rebuilt by who? That is a 50 plus year old transmission. You can buy a brand new trans with better upgrades for a few hundred more.
$800.00 would be more like it and that is if the seller has rock solid proof it was rebuilt. Not his word it was rebuilt but receipts from a reputable builder.

I have an M20 That is date coded June 10, 1970 Absolutely nothing wrong with it I am just upgrading to a T56 Magnum. I have a 621 Bellhousing and a Hurst Competition Shifter that I would sell everything together or piece it out depending on pricing. I would be more like half that number for just the trans if your interested.

How loud do you want it? The 3rd gear in my M23Z is like a gear drive! Sounds like a duece and a half.

TO OP, $1800 around 800 too much sir.

Personally I was a little disappointed that the transmission dosen't seem to have the whine of the factory M-22's. I've read where others have felt the same way and it is supposed to be because of the cases being thicker and the tolerances of the case and gears are much closer than the original M22's. It does seem to be very smooth and tight when shifting.

[email protected] on this. I just upgraded to a T56 and sold the M21, bellhousing, old flywheel and clutch, along with the a Hurst shifter and all the clutch linkage and pedals for $950. Trans came out of a running and driving car. $1,800 is way too much for a questionable item.

Maybe trannys are more common in the US, up here in Canada I have been looking for a while and $1200 CAD will get you an old tranny in need of a rebuild.
