Muncie 4 speed to a 5 speed with overdrive? 67 SS

Hey guys, Ive been debating doing this for a while and figured Id ask. My 67 SS has a 4 speed and a 4.56 rear gear. Id like to have the ability to get on the highway without it screaming at 60mph. Is there a 5 speed overdrive trans that I can swap in that wont have me cutting up my car? Id like to keep my gears as I like the low end punch. It would need to hold at least 500hp. Thanks in advance!

I got an LGT700. No floor pan modification is needed, but from what I have heard the wait time to get one is terrible. That being said it is completely worth while now that I have it.

I thought about that. Saw one on an episode of roadkill one time. But, I was shocked at how much they were. I don't know what the second hand market is getting price wise, but when I looked last they were between $3500-4000. .

I haven't seen any on the second hand market. I just know the last I heard it was a 2 year wait, but you should reach out to Jody's transmissions. Even if you go with something else he is awesome to work with. I bet he could set you up with something to fit your needs.

I also have a Legend and they are hard to come by but a good trans. The Richmond Super Street is another overdrive trans that requires no tunnel mods. They have been around a while and I occasionally see them selling used. New they are about $3.5K. One advantage of the Richmond is most of your associated items can be reused. Think the only new stuff one needs is a new clutch disc and a new front driveshaft yoke.
Then some say they have installed a case moded Tremec without cutting the trans tunnel. Not sure on what years.

If you talk to Jody i am curious to see what he says the wait times are.

My 66 Malibu has a TKO 600 with the .66 od and 3.73 gears. I love it. Probalby be ok with the 4.56 too.

66 Malibu Coupe, home rebuilt 350. Took me 39 years to get her!

I agree .... I have a TKO600 (.64 o.d.) in my SS ...
3.73s, 27 inch tires, it turns 1800-1900 rpm @65 mph...
4.56s would turn 2300-2400 rpm .... Still pretty good ....

If the LGT-700 was still $3500, I'd probably be on the waiting list for one. Last I checked they are now over $5 grand & still no guarantee when you'll get it. That price has officially removed me from the market.

Hopefully the Richmond 5 speed that was leaked at SEMA last year finally goes into production at some point.

Correct. Was on the waiting list for a year and a half when I got the call last October. $5500.00

Re: Muncie 4 speed to a 5 speed with overdrive? 67 SS

I just made the jump from an M21 to T56 and love it. It shifts great. Jody told me he can only get 15-20 LGT's a year, so it was really not an option, and at $5,500 the LGT was almost as much as the whole T56 conversion kit, which included new bell housing and clutch/flywheel and etc. Had to cut the tunnel, and I fretted about that for a long time. Used the Tinman Fab tunnel patch, and in the end the hardest parts were patching the old 4 speed shifter hump hole and scraping off the boom mat on the floor. The Tinman patch is the way to go for sure. Seats and console fit perfectly.

So did you go through with the Legend or did you pass?
Considering the cost and wait time for the Legend, the T56 is definitely worth considering. One big bonus with the double overdrive is it would allow for some steeper rear gears.

I passed. Just couldn't justify $5500 for a trans I would only use on the highway.
