66 backup light switch & bracket

I did a search on how to install the rear light backup switch and I couldn't find one. I looked in the assembly manual I have its not clear on how to install it. Anybody walk me through it would be a big help.

Re: 66 backup light switch & bracket

If you want, I'll get a picture of the switch installed on my 4 speed to get you started. Let me know and I'll put it up on my lift for a shot.

I took a couple of pictures. Send me a PM with your e-mail address so I can forward them. I don't know how to post them here.

Here is the new installation on my 66. I tried to do this per the AIM. My body is off the chassis making photos from a different angle easy.

Re: 66 backup light switch & bracket

Thanks again everyone great pictures. I have another problem the American wire kit I have the plug is different on the end of it. Do they have a adapter for this, I searched the bag from the kit and there's none that match.

Your switch connector is correct. I don't recognize the other two photos. Look in your assembly instructions on page M20 A9. You need harness 2988879 that connects to your underdash harness and goes the .92 dia hole in the firewall. This harness will mate with your switch.

Re: 66 backup light switch & bracket

The pictures on the right are from the under dash American auto wire kit. So I would need to get a adapter for this then.

Was your car originally a 4 speed car? Does your original harness have this adapter/extension still attached?

Re: 66 backup light switch & bracket

John,
This will work. The bracket mounts on the stop bolt on the aft part of the shifter and the reverse lever closes the switch when trans is shifted into reverse which completes the circuit. One terminal connects to the pink wire and the other terminal connects to the green wire at the base of the steering column. Just need to run those two wires. No harness needed.
