Re: I made a stupid mistake

This is why its important to set the emergency brake when parking. That parking pawl isn't going to hold your car if it takes a good hit..

I can just see the insurance adjuster asking if you set the brake when you parked your car before it got hit and went down the hill smashing into cars and ending up in your neighbors swimming pool...

This.

I have a company truck and company policy is that any time the driver isn't sitting in the driver's seat the parking brake must be set. I resisted and balked at the policy when they began enforcing it 10 years ago but it soon became second nature and now I do it in all vehicles I drive.

I feel lucky for that fact. I most likely will, just for peace of mind.

I just instituted this policy in my house last night, due to this experience, so at least some good came out of it. I have heard you should set the e-brake in the past but only ever did it on somewhat steep inclines. From now, on, it'll be every time. It's good to exercise the e-brake anyway.

I've always used my e-brake, force of habit.

Re: I made a stupid mistake

This probably doesn't apply to garaged muscle cars, or vehicles in a non-rusting climates, but I have a simple rules for parking brakes: Use them often or use them never. At least in my neck of the woods, (Indiana), the parking brake used once in a blue moon will inevitably freeze up and not release. It's not fun sitting in a parking lot in January trying to release a stuck parking brake or brakes so the car will move.
