Re: M21 stuck in gear

Typically occurs when gate adjustment is improper. Happened to me twice in my years of owning the Chevelle. If I have the problem right, ensure there is no load on the transmission. Chock it, and get underneath and physically pull the errant lever into its neutral position. Will see one pointing forward or backwards, and the other perpendicular to the ground( its neutral) The non-perp one is one you have to yank back into into neutral ( straight up/down).

The cause, if I have diagnosis correct, is rods that are not the right length. Undo the shift rods from shifter, place pin in neutral gate hole and then dial in the length of the rods, while the shift levers are all in their neutral place.

Welcome to TC BTW!

Re: M21 stuck in gear

Pull the linkage off the trans and try to put both levers in the center position. A lot of the time this is caused by linkage bind which can be repaired by adjusting the shifter, replacing the shifter bushings and shifter locks with Hurst type spring locks that keep the shifter in the bore against the bushing.

Re: M21 stuck in gear

I agree with Al and Gene. Problem probably isn't the transmission, it's in the linkage adjustment or the shifter.

Re: M21 stuck in gear

My 70 Nova used to do that once in awhile. What would happen is that one of the shifter plates that bolted up to the transmission would come loose and jam the shifter up.

Re: M21 stuck in gear

I learned, also the hard way, never to RED Loctite on those bolts, I still use blue Loctite on all shifter bolts.
