transmission pops out of gear

Hi all, new here. I recently updated my 69 malibu 307 powerglide to a 454 with a th350. Linkage seems to be in place with upgraded linkage rod, but i have 2 issues. First, the transmission shifts great, but when I slow to a stop, it will not drop back into first gear unless I manually shift it. Then, if I stomp on it, the shifter wants to drop into second gear unless I hold the column shifter in place. What locks the shifter into drive? Any help is greatly appriciated.
BB does have a pretty good cam. Not sure of any other specs, bought the motor as a drop in.

did you upgrade the motor mounts when swapping in the bbc?
or did we reuse the ones off the 307...??
how about the trans mount also??

Re: transmission pops out of gear

The various parts that make up the column shifter are often different parts between the PG and the TH350 (refer to your Assembly Manual and you'll see different part numbers for these pieces). It may seem odd, but the angles are somewhat different from one to another. You need to put the car up on 4 good jackstands, crawl under the car, and do some adjusting of the linkage.

This could be a good time to upgrade to a floor shifter.

Certainly giving some thought to a floor shifter, then new seats...where does it end? Love driving the car, hate to put it in the shop and wait for parts. Linkage is solid, but I dont know what parts of the column hold it in gear. its not done at the tranny.

Re: transmission pops out of gear

trans DOES a internal detent to position the spool valve correctly for each gear selected. Put the external linkage off and manual shift trans into each gear. You should be able to hear and feel resistance to all positions -if not- pull the pan and see why.
Spring bar could be broken or nut on shift shaft loose

And a bunch of other junk.

Thank you for the info.
It does drop into each gear with the linkage disconnected. Ill double check the linkage again and make sure it is resting dead center on each gear. I wasnt sure if there is another lock in the shift arm that holds it as well. In normal driving it isn't an issue, but when I romp on it from a stop the shift arm on my column drops into second like it is being pulled by the forces of the gods of horse power. I can hold it in place and its fine, just never had one do this.
PS. The new linkage I purchased has a heim joint at the top that connects to the steering column under the hood in the same place the old linkage did, a steel shaft with a bend, then another heim joint on the other end that attached directly to the shift arm on the transmission. It is adjustable.

thanks for anything else that could help. I appreciate all the input I can get.

Re: transmission pops out of gear

trans is changing gears because motor lifts on left side under acceleration , if the mounts are good -put a chain to limit travel- motor to frame
My Grand National Buick has a ratchet strap near the alternator for this purpose. You will see it on nearly all GNs....kinda cheesy but works

That makes perfect sense. The mounts are new but I will check to insure it is not damaged. I will add a limiter strap if that's the case, great info. Thank you again.
