67SS Coolant Overflowing

Hi all.

I have new-to-me 67 Chevelle SS 396 (325HP). I notice that after I drive the car I get some coolant pushing out of the overflow tube near the radiator cap. Not much - maybe 2 or 3 ounces over a few minutes (it just dribbles out...). I also suspect that it's dribbling out while I'm driving (I can faintly smell coolant).

The engine temps remain very stable while cruising (190) and it doesn't appear to be overheating...

When cold, I pulled off the radiator cap (which I replaced by the way) and notice that the coolant level is nearly full. I'm overfilled somehow? Is there something else that I should be checking?

It's embarrassing when a crowd gathers around the car and it's leaking coolant from the overflow tube.

Thanks!

Re: 67SS Coolant Overflowing

Hmm... upon reading some other threads on 'overflow', it appears that my radiator may be overfilled...

Yes, coolant needs room to expand or it will muscle past the radiator cap. Also a weak radiator cap can cause this if your levels are fine.

On the original radiator(I don't know about replacement ones), there is a line on the tank and I think the words "fill to", check it out!!

Re: 67SS Coolant Overflowing

You want the Coolant to be Down from the Rad Caps inside Opening by 1" to 1.5"

And put a Overflow Bottle on the System with a Clear Plastic Hose from below
the Rad Cap to the Bottle's Bottom Inlet
the Bottle's Top Vent is for if the Bottle gets full
and it can Vent some to the Ground via another Black Hose

Overflow Catch Can Black https://www.jegs.com/i/JAZ-Products/...25-01/10002/-1
1 Quart Capacity / 1/4" Barbed Top Vent Fitting With Hose / 1/4" Barbed Bottom Inlet Fitting

Re: 67SS Coolant Overflowing

You can just let it puke out until it seeks its own level and quits then do not add coolant or even loosen the cap.

BUT, the coolant shouldn't be pushing out of the overflow tube near the radiator cap, it should be coming out the bottom of the hose.

Thanks all for the replies!

It must have worked it's way out over the last few days of driving since it's not doing it anymore.

Dean - the coolant was leaking from the bottom of the drip tube (not at the cap). PS - I'm in Overland Park - hope to see you around someday!

Re: 67SS Coolant Overflowing

I certainly do know about the MACC. Are there any meets or cruises lately? I haven't really had a chance to take my car out and I haven't heard of any shows.

Thanks!

Re: 67SS Coolant Overflowing

We usually have our club meetings upstairs at Hendrick Chevrolet on the last Thursday of the month but the virus deal put a temporary stop to that.

We had a club meeting last Thursday evening at an Antioch Park Shelter house.

I think the June 25th meeting is going to be at The Merriam City Market.

You are welcome to come join us, non members always welcome.
