Question 1971 Firewall AC/heater opening?

I have a 1971 Chevelle that I think was a factory AC car. Currently the firewall has a heater only box with the fan tucked under the passenger fender. If the car was indeed a factory AC car would I be able to see the larger firewall opening behind or below the current heater only box or would that larger firewall opening be hidden behind that heater only box? Would it be obvious which firewall opening I have without having to pull the inner fender and remove the heat only box? Can anyone direct me to a drawing that shows both AC and non-ac firewall openings? Thanks for your help.

As you can see in Cody's comparison pictures, you would see a pretty good sized patch in the firewall on the driver's end of the heat only box.
(My son removed the A/C from his 70)
