Ideas on radiator overflow reservoir on 1966 Chevelle?

I just added a Cold Case radiator and electric fan setup in my '66 Chevelle and want to do a nice overflow reservoir.

I found a bunch of ideas here from '68 on where a newer Camaro overflow/recovery reservoir was used. But on those cars, the tank is on the passenger side. I need something that works on the driver side as my cap and overflow outlet is near the driver side of the radiator and points that way.

What have you guys done? Pictures would be great!

I made one, alum tubing, flat sheet for the bottom, weld on bung for the top. I realize not everyone has a tig, but I do

I bought a cheap reservoir from the parts store and mounted it on the driver's side. I made a couple of standoffs from some threaded rod and some small pipe that attach to the radiator support.

This is in my 67

The Clear Plastic Tube goes to the Bottom of the Catch Bottle
and sucks back in the Overflow when it starts to Cool Down

The Black Rubber Tube on the Top is so if it FillsUp the Catch Bottle it will Outflow any to the Ground
under the middle of the car away from the Rear Wheels/Tires path

You can get the same type Bottle from JEGS

Re: Ideas on radiator overflow reservoir on 1966 Chevelle?

Mr Gasket black can - seems to be no longer made. It fits alongside the rad, drivers side, using holes I made in the shroud support. Out of the way, no bling, Perfect. As I look over Summit's offerings, the closest one is made by "Jaz". MG has gone all metal it seems. I wont use alum of polished SS in a stock engine bay. Yet, if you prefer bling, all the cans are more blingy now than they were last century when I first built Old red. So alum or SS to match your rad.

NO pics as I ve got it all torn apart now.

A friend of mine that races his Supercar certified stock appearing 10 second L89 Nova just used his windshield washer bottle.
I actually did the same thing. But only use it for when I go to the track to pass tech.My car hasn't puked out of the hose in the almost 20 years I have owned it.
All you need is a big azz piece of hose

Re: Ideas on radiator overflow reservoir on 1966 Chevelle?

Thanks guys, these are all great ideas. I think to start, I may just use the windshield washer bottle. I mean, I don't think I've ever used the washer fluid in the 20+ years I've had the car (never gets dirty enough!). And it's right there next to the radiator outlet.

You'll need a recovery cap too, good luck!

An old oil can works well and gives it a 60s drag strip look.. Get one of the old cans that was made from steel..

Yea...I bought a new Cold Case radiator and also purchased their shiny billet radiator cap cover. So not sure if that is a recovery style cap, or I can get one that will fit the billet cover...

Re: Ideas on radiator overflow reservoir on 1966 Chevelle?

FWIW- Being cheap..Bought a surplus aluminum GI canteen and cup, installed behind the battery in my BB 70. A bolt thru the bottom of the cup and the inner fender well with a very short section of fuel line hours (about 1/8-1/4 inch) on the bolt between the bottom of the canteen cup and the inner fender panel to avoid rattling . A hardware store rubber plug replaced the canteen cap to seal it with 2 holes drilled in the plug, used left over brake line to fashion a 90 degree bend which has the radiator overflow hose attached to 1 end and the other end goes thru one of the holes in the rubber plug to almost the bottom of the canteen (this takes care of the radiator overflow side). Thru the second hole is a short approx. 90 degree bend of brake line which acts as a overflow vent in case you have more than 1 quart of overflow (which I doubt will ever happen). Total cost was around $15.00, tank is almost totally concealed out of sight behind the battery and is mounted so the canteen can be removed by removing the battery and disconnecting the hose, although I really do not see a reason I might have to remove it for service.

Re: Ideas on radiator overflow reservoir on 1966 Chevelle?

I use a stainless bicycle bottle and holder I got on Amazon..
Drill a hole in the top and drop the overflow tube in the bottle, easy to empty out by mounting the holder in by the radiator..

Re: Ideas on radiator overflow reservoir on 1966 Chevelle?

On my 67, I have used the Camaro bottle. It's on the left inner fender. I had to turn it 90 degrees and play with the position a little bit to get it square and level. I have a couple of holes drilled in the inner fender with bolts coming from the bottom into speed nuts on two of the mounting tabs.
