Deals of the Week—Ratcheting Wrenches, Off-Road Tires, and More!

Because it's Friday, we're taking a look back at some of our favorite automotive/DIY/tool deals we spotted over the course of the week. Tools and tires were the big winners, though we also spotted a massive out-of-category deal that we opted to share at the bottom of this list.

If you've never used them before, ratcheting wrenches are a godsend. Just think of those times, arms wedged elbow-deep in an engine bay with a wrench in hand, slowly and painstakingly removing a bolt one eighth of a turn at a time because the space is too narrow for your ratchet to reach it. This is EXACTLY what these ratcheting wrenches are designed for, and speaking from experience they're one of the best ways to improve your efficiency and avoid frustration in the process. GearWrench is one of the go-to brands in the category that makes solid quality ratcheting wrenches that aren't as expensive as pro-grade Snap-On or Mac Tools equivalents, and starting today this 12-piece set has been marked down to only $110. The two biggest benefits of this set in particular are that it includes all sizes between 8 and 19mm (some sets occasionally skip sizes), and that they are not offset wrenches. Offset ratcheting ratchets use a switch to change directions, which can be cumbersome in tight engine bays.

The biggest challenge with any at-home automotive DIY is access, and there are only so many solutions out there outside of installing a car hoist in your home garage or putting together a "car service kit" like the one seen here. Portable drive-on ramps can sometimes solve your under-car access woes, but generally speaking resorting to a simple jack and stands provides a simpler and more secure solution—not to mention that with ramps you are left unable to perform brake and suspension work. There are numerous floor jack and jack stand options out there, but we stumbled across a solid package deal from Powerbilt that covers all the bases in one fell swoop. For just under $90 this car service set—comprised of a two-ton floor jack, two jack stands, a 36-inch creeper, and a pair of wheel chocks—delivers everything you'll need in a single package for less than what some midrange floor jacks go for on their own.

The team at has been throwing some healthy bargains around lately, but this latest pack of wheel and tire deals is bringing some hefty savings to a broad range of brands across the site. Toyo, Maxxis, and BF Goodrich tires, plus wheels from XD, Fuel, LRG, Pro Comp, and others are all up for grabs at varying levels of discounts. If you've been thinking about upgrading the wheels and tires on your Jeep, truck, or SUV, now might be the perfect time. Of the 20+ deals on the list, of course some are more significant than others. The savings of up to $200 on Mickey Thompson and Dick Cepek tires are quite substantial, and on the wheel side, 15% discounts on Pro Comp wheels, and offerings from Trail Master for as little as $40 are both worthy of a closer look. Approach with a keen eye, of course, as in some cases the discounts are pretty minor, but still worth a quick glance.

Black Friday is almost here, but rather than waiting this Lowe's sale is offering up some great savings on hand tool sets for the mechanically inclined DIYers out there. Savings are ranging from roughly 20 to 50%, and two of our favorite deals in the pile are at the top of that spectrum. A pair of mechanic's tool sets—one 129-piece set and one 227-piece set—are both marked down by 50%, coming in at $49.97 and $99 respectively. The smaller set includes 1/4" drive and 3/8" drive ratchets with a range of both deep and standard depth sockets sockets (both metric and SAE), extensions, and other goodies. The larger set builds on that base, adding a larger 1/2" drive socket set, as well as 30 metric and SAE combo wrenches and an assortment of Allen keys. As a final added bonus, the 227-piece set comes in a well-designed 3-drawer storage case.

As we get closer to Black Friday and Cyber Monday, it looks like more and more retailers are trying to get ahead of their competition by rolling out significant sales ahead of schedule. Case in point, The 'Gear Up Get Out' REI sale is HUGE this year, with discounts of 20, 30, and 50% off on outdoor gear of all kinds, including Patagonia outerwear, Arc'teryx jackets, Garmin GPS Watches, Snowshoes, and a hefty stack of ski and snowboard gear.

Besides being bombarded with ads all over the site now it seems like they're paying to spam now. Being that they're a vendor you can't add them to the ignore list, so you just have to put up with it.
