help with weird dome light problem

I have a 68 malibu and i am having a problem with my dome light and oil pressure light.

I ran new hot and ground wires to the dome light before I had my headliner installed.(I know that the ground is what is broken by the door switch) everything was fine until....I installed a console and hooked up the wiring for its light. I ran the console lights hot wire directly to the side of the fuse box which is hot all the time (not controlled by the ignition switch) and hooked the ground wire into the ground wire I installed for the headliner dome light. Every thing works fine, but now my engine light comes on! It will do this intermittintly even with the engine off and no key in the ignition. Needless to say this runs down my battery. Must be a problem with the ground somewhere. Hopefully someone here can give me some possible things to check. THANKS!

Re: help with weird dome light problem

Everything sounds close. What happens if you unplug the console hot wire from the fuse block? Does the oil light start behaving itself?
Maybe tie the console hot wire to the LAMPS circuit so they come on with the headlight switch and not the door switch.

Re: help with weird dome light problem

are you talking about the light on the rear of the console ?

the hot should be hooked to the orange wire that is always hot
then the ground is broken by the door switches and dome lamp switch on the lightswitch
with the hot wire hooked to the fuse box - it may be backfeeding through another circuit
you also may want to check if the glove box lamp is working properly and has no shorts
