Diodes?

was looking for diodes to give my relays longer life for my 2 speed taurus fan. I picked up some 3 amp 400PIV rectifier diodes, will these work? The part # 1n5408 was not availiable so i got the 1n5404. will these be ok?

Re: Diodes?

The 1N5408 has a higher PIV and same amp rating. I can't see those fans when free wheeling generating more or even close to the 400 PIV the 1N5404 is rated for. They should work fine.

Re: Diodes?

Sorry, I was thinking backwards when I replied. The fans won't create inverse voltage when free wheeling, they'll create forward voltage. The diodes will allow the voltage through, essentially shorting out the fan. Doesn't matter, the current rating of both diodes is 3 amps. That's what matters in this case not the PIV.

The PIV has to be high enough to withstand the voltage applied to the fan when the relay is on, which is only 12v. With a PIV of 400v those diodes should be good.

Just wanted to clarify that.
