Unhappy Everything stays on when key is off?

Hi all, I was wondering if any one has a clue why everything in my 69 malibu 350, stays on after the key is off. I wouldn't mind a couple of suggetions so I can start ruling them out or investigate further. I am new to this forum So thanks in advance for all your wisdom. negra chevella

Could be the ignition switch adjustment. The key unlocks the steering column and positions the ignition switch that is mounted on top of the steering column. It's possible to have the lock in the off position but the switch not quite in the off position.

Well......do you mean it "runs-on" then quits...or runs and you have to pull the battery or coil wire to get it to stop? Big difference in where to look!!!

I am assuming the later. If this is the case let me ask you a few questions. Have you changed anything electrical including working on the starter? Which coil set-up do youhave.....stock or HEI? Usually what happens is that either someone hooks up an full time DC feed to the ignition or the ignition switch is bad or misadjusted. I have seen this where the ignition switch (on the bottom of the steering column) was loose or broken. Also, what do you still have the old style coil in? The feed from the starter R terminal can be the source sometimes either laying onthe positive terminal or mistakingly hooked there.

A quick check is to measure the voltage at the coil with the key off. If there is DC there...then find where it's coming from. Get a schematic and go for it.

hey what type of ignition set up do u have? if its an msd, i had the same problem. There is a mini capacitor that you you can put in line to your alternator o prevent a current from constantly going through the system

I believe it's called a Diode-not a mini capacitor. A diode is like an electrical check valve--current can only flow in one direction.

Good health is merely the slowest possible rate at which one can die.
Good livin' will speed it up, but it's worth it.
