The braided (cloth covered) wire is USUALLY the ignition resistance wire that goes to the + side of the coil. It is usually mated to a yellow one that goes to the R terminal at the starter. The cloth covered portion comes from the bulkhead at the firewall.

You may want to get this wiring diagram:

Ithink i will just replace the whole harness instead of trying to figure out the one that is on there. I see you can get the harness that has the hei plugs on it so nothing will be cobbed on. Thanks for your input, you have been very helpful in all of this.
