Dome light coming on with shifter movement...

My dome light has started coming on with my shifter in different positions (automatic with factory horseshoe shifter). It mainly does it in low, but now it is also doing it in park. I am presuming that something in the neutral safety switch is causing the issue.

What is going to be the most effective method for tracking this issue down?? If anyone has any ideas, you input will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Re: Dome light coming on with shifter movement...

Check the white wire inside the console that feeds the rear seat divider lamp on the back of the console. If this wire is damaged and mechanically being pulled/touched to ground, it will put a ground on all of the white wires in the courtesy lamp circuit causing the lights to come on. That is a starting point.

I've checked things over and can find no damage to that wire. Is there someplace else to look?? It is definitely being caused by the movement of the shifter (it will sometimes come on in the second gear and drive positions).

Re: Dome light coming on with shifter movement...

Joe is spot on, NSS has nothing to do with it. You have a center console correct? There is also a light in the rear of that console that comes on with the rest of the courtesy lights. The introduction to ground is completing that circuit. If Iím not mistaken, the center console has a completely different harness that you can disconnect. Unplug it and go for a drive. Iím guessing the white wire is compromised somewhere where you are not seeing it. If it stops while unplugged, Iím right.

If you donít push the limits how are you going to find the weak spots?

Re: Dome light coming on with shifter movement...

Where is the connector located?? Under the front of the console or under the dash??

Both places have the connector. Under the console top plate at the front of the console would be the best place. It will unplug all the wires.

Your shifter movement is most likely grounding out the white rear courtesy lamp wire for the console. Look for that wire.

Re: Dome light coming on with shifter movement...

Okay. I took the top off of the console and discovered that the shifter plate was loose at the front. The harness was being rubbed a little bit. I couldn't see any damaged wires, but I taped the bundle up a little higher and resecured the shifter plate. No more dome light weirdness. On a side note, the rear console light wires come through the same plug as the neutral safety switch (it is one wide plug with several wires in it). Thanks for the guidance.
