Question About Installing Rev Limiter

The diagram for hooking up the rev limiter to my HEI shows the following:
White and Green to Brown at cap.
Red to Pink or Red at cap.
Black to Black at cap.

Is there any reason I couldn't mount the rev limiter under the dash and connect the wires as follows:
White and Green to the tach wire under the dash.
Red to an Ignition Power source under the dash.
Black directly to ground under the dash.

I think hiding everything under the dash would make a neater installation. It seems to me that I'm tapping into the same wires, just not right at the distributor, but I'm not sure enough of my electrical knowledge/skills to know if what I'm suggesting will work.

Re: Question About Installing Rev Limiter

Rick it might help if you supplied some details on which rev limiter (make/model...).

Re: Question About Installing Rev Limiter

I bought DUI's rev limiter, with their performance HEI.

Re: Question About Installing Rev Limiter

Tried to find their instructions but no luck. Maybe give DUI a call and they should be able to help.

Re: Question About Installing Rev Limiter

Calling DUI's tech support was the first thing I tried. Instead of telling me "Yes" you can do it that way, or "no" that won't work, he said, "It's always better to follow the instructions." I wasn't sure if he didn't know the answer, or he was just giving the safe answer to avoid any liability if I screwed something up.

The more I think about it, it seems like I should be able to connect to the same wires under the dash, and get the same result as if I connected right at the cap. Am I missing something?

Re: Question About Installing Rev Limiter

Should be able to but I'm not sure that all of the wires are inside the car. A wiring diagram makes the decision much easier.

Re: Question About Installing Rev Limiter

I'm also installing an American Autowire Classic Update harness and Dakota Digital gauges. Between the instructions, color-coded wires, and the wires being marked, it's fairly easy to trace the wires.

Re: Question About Installing Rev Limiter

Rick: not trying to get off track but have another question about your dist. I bought a new dist about 4 years ago from DUI. Before I had purchased mine they had offered a Rev limiter as an option on their product. At the time I purchased the Rev limiters were not available as I am guessing they were having some issues with the Rev limiters and we're trying to get that taken care of. I never followed through so I don't know what happened. Are they now offering a Rev limiter that can be added to their dist? I also have the AAW classic update kit.

Re: Question About Installing Rev Limiter

This rev limiter is a separate piece, not built into the distributor. Photo and description are on their website.

Re: Question About Installing Rev Limiter

You could put it in the trunk as long as your wiring is correct. Wires just need the correct path they will work in any location.

Re: Question About Installing Rev Limiter

As long as the wires eventually make their way to the terminal the instructions mention, there's no reason you can't tie into them at any point along their length.
