1964 Chevelle SS

1964 Chevelle SS

Does anyone have a wiring diagram for a 64 SS with tach and clock they can pass off to me?

My tach has 2 wires - One went to the ign fused terminal and the other wire was cut and dangling. Anyone know where that goes?

Probably more to come later....

Thanks in advance....Gary

Re: 1964 Chevelle SS

The tach needs power and a signal from the distributor. The tach signal wire connects to the coil (-).

Black with pink stripe is the switched +12 volts from the ignition switch.

The tach gets its ground from the cluster it's mounted in.

Clock gets constant battery power from the black with orange stripe. It gets its ground from the cluster it is mounted in.

Gary you have email. Chelsea, I did not find your email. There are 2 64 chevelle wiring diagrams. I don`t think they have the tach, but should help some.

Re: 1964 Chevelle SS

Thanks a bunch guys. This helps a lot...

I've pulled the harness out to look at it and check the wiring and it looks pretty good to me. No frayed wires and a few loose light terminals, which I'll fix.

This is probably a novice question, but I did do a search and I have done quite a few re-wire jobs, but how do you separate the fuse box from the bulkhead fittings? They normally come apart kinda easily, but not this one. I don't want to tug too hard on it since I don't want to break anything. The brake booster is making it hard to get at the bulkhead connectors. The previous owner has zip ties around the bulkhead fittings in the engine compartment.

My questions are...Did there used to be clips to hold everything together and the PO used zip ties to fix it after he broke them off? Do the bulkhead connectors pull thru to the interior of the car, or do you need to separate them from the engine compartment?

The tach has the two terminals in the back. The power (Black/Pink) went to the upper terminal on the tach. Does anyone know if this is correct?

I have attached some pics....

Thanks again.....Gary
