What Is This And Why Is It Trying To Burn up ??

I`m going to try and get the AC system up and running after having been in storage since 1994 and the AC system has sat partially opened for many of those years so...

I went out to check a few things and I noticed a problem. With the key in the RUN position (engine not running though) I was looking to see if the AC clutch would engage and I noticed a burning wire smell and sure enough the harness was very VERY warm.

I found the culprit after unwrapping the harness some, was this PINK wire that looped back on itself and terminated to what looks like a coil connection.

This a picture of the wire, it`s the wire to the right it`s pink even though it doesn`t look it.

The loop to the left is the same pink wire that simply doubles back on itself to end at the connecter thing, is this part of the Anti Diesel feature ?? I ask because it is a 71.

Why would it get so hot when it was simply taped up and not actually touching a ground!?..

That looks like the coil wire that would be used with a points distributor. It will get hot in the run position with the car not running. The air conditioning wires are a separate harness that you can see in your pic. It's where that big black grommet is coming out of the firewall near the distributor.

Looks your having wiring wars Steve. One of my least desirable ventures. The 71 must be getting roadworthy if your thinking A/C? Getting hot down there where you are I saw. We Oregonians are all a twitter because we hit 82 yesterday.

My "Time Machine", sold and gone. Looking for another.

That point wire shouldn't get hot if it's not connected to anything. I got the impression from his post that the wire wasn't fastened to anything.

Having said that, if it was connected to the coil then I agree that it will run hot. With a proper application if should never get hot enough to smell however.

Correct..not attached to anything, it was wrapped tight with electrical tape. That`s a bit confusing to me too.

I`m thinking maybe the Mods could move this over to the Electrical & Wiring section !?
That might be better.

Make sure the yellow wire isn't grounding out on anything.
It should be connected to the starter "R" terminal

To be honest, I forgot about it. I need to disconnect at the starter also?

What's the other wire go to. I'd agree if it's not connected it shouldn't get hot but it must be connected somehow maybe back feeding through the second wire.

Re: What Is This And Why Is It Trying To Burn up ??

Disconnecting both is the safest. 1 at the bulkhead and the yellow at the starter.

I`m wondering if that other wire (pink) is part of the Anti Dieseling feature that is unique to 71`s ?? That`s the one that gets hot.

So by being connected to the coil to sense when the car is shut off then that triggers the Anti Diesel mode ??...
I think I read something like that somewhere (no way could I come up with that on my own )

BigRed, sorry about busting in on your thread but this seems like a subject for all that switched to hei. I haven't actually looked yet but your wires look the same as my 69. I'm pretty sure I have two, just not positive on color. So, kinda debunks the anti-diesel theory, maybe.

Hey, I`m just glad you`re lending a hand here

I traced the yellow wire across to the passenger side and it goes into the white connector shown in the picture then continues downward.
I need to trace the pink wire back into the fuse box next.

But for now maybe this picture will help identify something.
