Front Turn Signals Out - Need Guidance

1971 Chevelle convertible.

Both of my front turn signals are not working. The rear works on both sides. Headlights both work.

Where do I start to find the source? Can someone give me a walk through to find the problem, step-by-step?

Which fuse would they be on? Is there anything else on the same fuse?

The fuse box is labeled. Your owner's manual should have the data in it. It's doubtful the problem is a fuse (since the rears work).

First check your bulbs... It's doubtful that they both went at about the same time, but it happens.

Then check your grounds.

If that doesn't work then download the full-color wiring diagram that's on this site and then get a testing probe and start tracking the current flow through the wires. You'll be looking for a broken wire at that point.

Things to look into first...

When you activate the turnsignal switch, you state the rears flash...what do the little arrow indicators in the dash do?

What happens when you activate the 4-way hazard flashers? Do the fronts work? Do the arrows work?

Re: Front Turn Signals Out - Need Guidance

I have a Dakota Digital dash and the turn signals show through it.

Will try the flashers when I get home.

Tried the flashers. They show up in the dash and in the rear. The front do nothing.

Re: Front Turn Signals Out - Need Guidance

I think the problem may be some melted/burned wires on the firewall side of the fuse block. Does anyone have a photo of the wires and labels of what goes where?

How bad is the burned/melted wires?

You might be better off looking at replacement harness(es).

Re: Front Turn Signals Out - Need Guidance

So I had some time today to dive in to the wires and lack of front turn signals. Here are some pictures of the harness and back side of the fuse box. Does this look abnormal?

Also, it looks like the wires going to the turn signals are not the ones burned/melted. Not sure if they should be affected.

Have you checked for power on the light blue and dark blue wires in the column connector?

I haven't checked. I was under the impression that if the signal was displaying in my dash and the rear turn signals worked, the front should be getting power.

Re: Front Turn Signals Out - Need Guidance

There's no need to probe the column connector, as we have established power is leaving the front "outputs" (blue and light blue) from the turn signal switch.

Do you have a fuse holder (the type with wires coming out of it) with a 10 amp fuse? You can do a quick simple check with that bulkhead apart.

It looks like you are missing some of the sealing compound on the engine harness side, but not seeing "burnt". It's hard to tell from the pictures, but some of the terminals might be pressed back further in the housing then they should be on the male ends, not on the fuse block side. Also hard to tell on the forward lamp side, but is all that "goo" dielectric grease inside? What color is it?

Also, what's with that wire that is cut and pinched where the fuse block mounts to the firewall ?
