72 Chevelle Wiring Connection Pictures and Diagrams

Well, after four weekends of research, reviewing wiring diagrams, and wiring harness cleaning and rewrapping, I've been able to identify all of the connections on all of my harnesses. I bought my Chevelle as a project with all of the harness removed and stuffed into a big box. It's been a real puzzle determining what plugs into what, even with a Factory Assembly Manual and factory wiring diagrams. They are ambiguous to say the least. Most of my research was on this forum, and I want to thank everybody who responds to questions. And a special thanks to Elree Colby for all of his responses and insight on Chevelle electrical systems.
I am not new to this forum, but this is only my second posting. I want to pay forward the results of my work. I have photographed and documented each and every wiring harness connection in my car. This information is posted on the following web page:

http://www.cars.russgreen.net/1972_S...ss_wiring.html

Included are several diagrams that I scoured from this forum and the internet.

I hope this is helpful to all of you trying to identify that mystery wire that you just can't figure out what it goes to.

If I am wrong or have mis-labeled any of these connections please let me know. Also, if anyone has any additional information they would like to contribute, please send it to me. I plan to continue to add photos as I get the wiring installed in the car.

Good luck to all.

Russ

I may very well be wrong on this but on the tail light harness AP should be the tank connector & AQ should be the license plate light.

You are absolutly right Hank. Thank you for catching that. I had them labeled backwards. The brown wire is the license plate light and the tan wire is the fuel gas gauge wire. It is now corrected.

Re: 72 Chevelle Wiring Connection Pictures and Diagrams

Hi Russ,
Excellent work on your website. I only wish I could use more of it. I've run into a great deal of ambiguity in wiring diagrams for 1972 Chevelles. None of what I've found on the internet exactly matches what I have in the car. I feel like an idiot trying to figure this wiring out.

Did you find that there were differences and changes within 1972? I've found wiring diagrams from various sources, and none have matched the wiring colors or the connector pinout that I have. Many are close, but for instance, I have found no wiring diagrams that have the purple starter solenoid wire at the same position in the engine header connector as what I have.

I see your great pictures, but mine doesn't match. Arggggg! Any advice? Do you know if there was a change mid-year or something? I'm fairly certain that the wiring has never been changed in this car.

Thanks,
Steve

Re: 72 Chevelle Wiring Connection Pictures and Diagrams

Hi Steve,
What I found with my Chevelle is that my bulkhead connector did not match any documentation exactly either. It matched the diagrams pretty closely though. My belief is that the bulkhead connectors were built based on the options ordered with each car. My car was an AC car with gauges and tach and had more bulkhead connections than show up in the diagram. The bulkhead pinouts shown were correct for my car. I wouldn't think the locations would change, as replacement harnesses would have to plug in correctly. My engine harness was all chopped up at the starter and alternator connections, so I replaced it with one from American Autowire. It matched my original exactly at the bulkhead.
I would suggest checking all of your bulkhead connections with a test light if you haven't already. That's how I checked mine. With all of the sealer the factory put on the outside of the connector, it was the only way I could tell which wire went to which pin.
I am by no means an electrical expert for Chevelles. That is why I documented all of my connections after weeks of searching for answers myself. Best of luck to you.

Russ

HI Russ.
May I offer a suggestion and ask that you put your pictures and details in this thread. That way, if you ever move web providers or cancel your web page, the pictures and details are here forever. Broken links are a real disappointment. Great job BTW.

Re: 72 Chevelle Wiring Connection Pictures and Diagrams

Thanks Magnus. I'm glad that this info is of some help. I've installed my dash now and am getting ready to install the engine compartment wiring. I plan to add pictures as I complete the wiring.
The object in the rear divider that you asked about is the gas tank vent canister. The three vent lines on the gas tank connect to the bottom of this, and the a fourth line routes from the bottom of this canister up the driver side frame (beside the brake line) to the charcoal/emissions canister mounted in the engine compartment behind the left headlight.
Best of luck on your Chevelle project!

Re: 72 Chevelle Wiring Connection Pictures and Diagrams

Hi Russ,
Thanks for the advice. That's exactly what I did. I went through wire by wire and figured out which wire goes where in the dash and the engine compartment. The wire colors seemed to be mostly (or all?) the same as in the diagrams, but the positions in the header connector were different. I've printed off 3 different wiring diagrams from various sources, and none of the 3 matched the other exactly. I guess it is trial and error. It was quite a project, but I ended up making a couple of sheets that showed the pinout of my bulk connector, one from each side, as the colors sometimes changed going through the firewall.

Here's what I came up with... hoping it will help someone else.
